We can thank Kevin Rudd for this stunning victory and I have no trouble doing that.

Well done Kevvie, you started the ball rolling and now Japan has to cease their horrific killing of these majestic creatures.

JAPAN may continue to kill whales in the northern Pacific, despite a UN court ruling that its annual “scientific” expedition in the Antarctic was unlawful, says Tokyo’s envoy to International Court of Justice.

Twelve of the 16 judges of the Court of International Justice in The Hague endorsed Australia’s claimthat the Japanese Antarctic whaling program, described as scientific research, was unlawful.

Will they really take any notice? The Whalers will say that they never heard of the ruling.

Just wait and see.

Not only that Erica, but who will enforce it?

Are there penalties if they don't adhere to the ruling?

Who will impose those?

They're honourable people, so I imagine they'll stick to their word.

Will the Japanes Govt implement laws so that they can enforce this against rogues?

Japan doesn't have automatic ratification of International laws like we do. And whilst I acknowledge, that as a whole the Japanese are honourable, there are always rogues in any society, and the income of some people has just been halted. Will they necessarily stop this practise?

I hope so, it's a brilliant outcome

Sure they are.  They ignored our protests and fished our waters for whales for years,

instead of staying out in international waters

The scientific research has always been just an excuse for fishing, sort of a loop hole. I just hope the Japanese don't find another way around the international courts ruling.

I just hope Abbott doesn't tell them it's all a mistake of the previous govt and they're welcome to keep fishing for whale.

It was a comment.  It was a perfectly acceptable comment about a PM who has dumped on the scientific community and dumped on every single initiative of the previous government.

It was no more negative than he.

But Tony Abbott would never have taken this court action – and won't make a big noise about it.

To him, Labor's threat in 2010 to haul Japan to court was a needless way to antagonise ''our most important trading partner, a fellow democracy, an ally''. He even warned that any action beyond sending a patrol ship could be construed as ''war like''.

His claim then was overblown and not clearly expressed. The court action carried risks, but conservatives regularly emphasise the importance of values in foreign policy and on whaling, Australians are overwhelmingly opposed.

The disappointed will be a very sorry lot if they can't say something positive about this outcome.

Labor are no longer in power so any "initiatives" they managed will be changed that's the nature of a change of government.

Remember what Peter Garret said "when we get in we'll change everything". So get used to it is my advice.
