Julian Assange To Leave Ecuadorian Embassy "Soon"

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has announced that he will be leaving the Ecuadorean embassy "soon", ending a two year period of political asylum.

Mr Assange acknowledged that he had developed difficulties with his health during his period at the embassy, however would not link these medical issues with his decision to leave the building.

Mr Assange again denied all accusations of rape in this evening's press conference, saying "the claims that women in Sweden have accused me of serious offences, of rape, are false."

"I have not been charged with an offence here in the United Kingdom, or Sweden, at any time," he said.

Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricarod Patino said that his government would continue to work with other nations to secure safe passage for Mr Assange.

He also said that representatives from the Ecuadorean government would meet with the UK Foreign Office to discuss Mr Assange's case.

"It is time to free Julian Assange... It's time for his human rights to be finally respected," Mr Patino said.

His physical problems may have come as a result of his confinement, with The Mail on Sunday claiming that a severe Vitamin D deficiency contributing to his illness.

The British Foreign Office apparently turned down the Ecuadorean government’s request to take him to hospital, allegedly saying that leaving the building would forfeit Mr Assange’s diplomatic protection.

No way he'll be allowed to go free. Wouldn't surprise me if he had an unfortunate "accident" or died of complications to his current condition.

In light of the Mahmudiaya killings, the propaganda machine is in no position to pursue the bogus rape allegations against this man. They have since moved on to more feasible and newsworthy enemies of "freedom" and "democracy".  I think Julian will quietly  be forgoten about, as was David Hicks and countless others.

..Since then police have maintained a round-the-clock presence outside the building, in London's Knightsbridge, at a cost of £6.4m.

Clive Coleman, the BBC's legal correspondent, said that nothing had changed since 2012 and Mr Assange would be arrested and extradited if he left the embassy.

Speaking at the news conference, Mr Assange said: "I understand that Kristinn Hrafnsson has said that he can confirm I am leaving the embassy soon".

But he added it was not because he needed medical treatment, as had been reported in some of the UK press.

Julian may be quietly "forgotten" be the press, but I think the people who were exposed by wikileaks won't be so quick to forgive and forget. Some of those breaches are still festering in diplomatic corridors, I'd say.

Who even knows about the Mahmudiyah killings? I had to google it. I think the propoganda machine has played them down while they'll play up Assanges fake rape charges. Propaganda machines tend to do that.

Assange has only been uninteresting to the press while he's been isolated at the Embassy. Once he comes out they'll go into overdrive.

Things around Edward Snowden have been quiet too, only because the russians have him and the press can't get at him.

Assanges fake rape charges.

If the charges are fake why doesnt he stand by his convictions and face the courts in Sweden....

Assange has no convictions or ethics or a moral backbone  and I have no time for him at all and hope that he is arrested and faces the rape charges, if he is innocent then let the courts decide

Your post would be funny if I thought you were serious.  But you can't be.

I am serious.. very serious...

Julian Assange has thrown away all his moral advantage. After exhaustive and wholly transparent legal procedures, the British courts ordered his extradition to Sweden, where he faces two sex charges, one of rape and one of molestation.

Sweden is a neutral country which is in no sense a pawn of the United States, and scarcely even an ally. Moreover, its courts are as free and unbiased as any in the world. If a man can’t get a fair trial in Sweden, he can’t get one anywhere.

Mr Assange’s refusal to face trial there — on the apparent grounds that he might be spirited away by the American authorities — is both disingenuous and unconvincing.

It smacks of moral cowardice.

Because he says it was consensual and feels the charges are trumped up to get him to Sweden so they can extradite him to the US.

You're welcome to you opinion of course, but I can't agree with you in this case.

Well, his legal representatives do not agree with you nero.  The Yanks would love to get their hands on him,  they have not closed the case, as far as I know.  I am not surprised that Assange does not want to end up like Bradley Manning.

The case in Sweden is so obviously a set up.  He did not rape anybody, the 2 women only just met him and willingly had sex with him; why would they think that he is not having sex with anybody else?   I am just surprised they have not backed away as yet - or maybe they have, and that is why Assange may be able to leave the embassy.
