Re: Julie Bishop for PM?.....??

On 22 September 2008, Bishop was offered the role of Shadow Treasurer by Nelson's successor as Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull.

5 months later......

On 16 February 2009, she resigned from the position of Shadow Treasurer, due to dissatisfaction within Liberal ranks over her performance.

Pickering - a fave of the right wingers.

Julie Bishop:

Highly motivated and competent, but lacks experience in Government on a broad scale.

A Foreign Minister needs to attend an avalanche of cocktail parties, engage in polite conversation, deliver well-prepared speeches and construct communiqués that don’t offend.

I suspect even Bishop realises this and her refusal to deny she would challenge Abbott maybe a venomous attempt to clear the decks and allow someone else’s hat to be thrown in the ring.

Even geese like Bob Carr and Kevin Rudd managed Foreign Affairs without too many faux pas.

Another few years and Bishop will make an all round excellent PM. (7/4)

Thanks for all that, Am.  At the  moment I don't have time and patience for research.

I take my views from several senior political journalists and very experienced political commentators.  One who I admire greatly shows no bias at all.  Well, most of the experienced show no bias.

People who argue based on superficial observations only display profound naivety.

A3: "Back to Julie... Nov 2014

"In the 80s and 90s, she became the instructing solicitor for CSR, the parent company for Wittenoom mine. More than 2000 workers and residents have died as a result of asbestos diseases in that town – as a result of the mineral mined there.

Julie Bishop told Jordan Baker in The Australian last year: "We did everything we could to fight the case professionally - when I say fight it, to test the legal propositions, knowing that the other cases potentially rested on this . . . . did I stand there and say 'no, I have a moral objection to working on this case'? Of course not."

Hang on A3, I thought you had decreed  "no history"

I will try again, and repeat for SN and A3 what I have  before when the Myops attempt to discredit Bishop for her legal past, and following accepted protocols :

V3000 , my point,  which I have made a few times before and which P007 ignores (inconvenient to the party line),  is that within the legal system  the cab-rank rule is the obligation of a barrister to accept any work in a field in which he/she  professes competent to practise, at a court at which he normally appears, and at  usual rates.

Bishop was a lawyer with Robinson Cox  which became Clayton Utz ,   CSR,  was a long-time Robinson Cox client, and as a result . Bishop, then Julie Gillon, became CSR's instructing solicitor.

I have asked  (with little success) what P007 thinks of lawyers who have to represent murderers, rapists, paedophiles. No perceived grist for the ALP mill there though.

PS

I would suggest there is very little concern  here apropos the CSR proceedings, but  more a  regurgitating of  the party line in the form of old chestnuts designed to discredit Bishop.  This in itself is indicative of the (understandable)  concern being shown by the pink Myops/ALP/ACTU regarding a tough political opponent and acknowledged successful Foreign Minister who will not  "go away",  or resort to whinging.

Bishop once said: "Stop whinging, get on with it and prove them all wrong, when asked what advice she would give to women."

Good advice which Poor Me never followed, or probably did not even understand.

26/06/13

Prime minister Julia Gillard has resigned her position and will not recontest the next election.

Due to dissatisfaction within the Caucus,  ALP ranks, and according to the polls, the electorate.

Why are you feeling sorry for yourself?

Have you got no friends?

Don't worry, you won't have to live forever and who knows, you might get lucky and come back as a woman.

Is this the Diary of our Current Sinking Govt thread? No, I thought not.

Apart from that a poster requested background experience for Julie Bishop, that I have provided. Particularly relevant don't you think in a thread  titled Julie Bishop for PM?.

Re: Julie Bishop for PM?.....??

Is Julia Gillard or K Rudd in the running for PM, if/when Abbott is dumped? No? I thought not, so lets focus on the subject of this thread - Julie Bishop

Feb 4, 2015

What would it be like if the nation did a Bishop or Turnbull instead?

One explanation for the indecision is that there are serious questions about each of the possible leadership replacements.

1. Julie Bishop

The Foreign Minister has been the shiny star performer of the government's wonky first 16 months. Arguably, she has had a job that has taken her out of the trickier domestic fray, but she has not put a major foot wrong and won points for the way she handled the MH17 crisis.

The long-time deputy (to three Liberal leaders now) is also liked by her colleagues, who really appreciate the time she puts in to talk to them and listen to their concerns (unlike some people ...).

She is confident, she is tough, she has a sense of humour. And in case anyone was worried about the health of the Prime Minister, like Abbott she is a fitness fanatic.

BUT

Despite holding portfolios such as education and ageing in the Howard government, Bishop is not seen to be as strong on domestic issues, particularly economic ones. She had an unimpressive time of it in the shadow treasury portfolio under Turnbull's leadership.

In terms of the conservative wing of the conservatives, Bishop also runs the risk of being viewed as too "small l" liberal. She is a republican, after all.

As someone who has been so close to the senior leadership of the Abbott years, it is also reasonable to ask, how different would she be from the current leader?

I haven't heard her talk much about policy or her beliefs, just heard her attack Labor and Gillard.

Reply to no-one in particular..........

this is a little like real life after all huh Smiley Frustrated

I mean, how many people do you hear of looking for jobs and being told they need experience.......

So tell me, how does a PM get experience in the role of PM until they are actually elected PM ?

Please God don't be suggesting someone who has an economic background, or we could all end up with Joe and his 'no car for poor people' idea's.
