I didn't buy it so have no idea what it cost but it looks like the basic one.

Amy, I bought my son one for his 12th birthday (and boy does it get a workout!)

I had discussed with him the new ones with no keyboard and he hated the idea.  He had no idea I was getting him one, but he used mine a lot. Because there is a built in dictionary, he often used it to look up words. Not haveing a keyboard would make that very tiresome.

The smaller ones also have half the amount of memory and half the battery capacity of the keyboard ones.

It looks like I will be buying a third one soon - Master 13 has decided he likes reading them too.  I have been chatting a little on the Kindle Forums, there is an Australian thread on there.  They recommended that I buy a refurbished WiFi only one online from the electronics store that sells them.  I just hope they still have them available when I have saved up the money. 😐

Re: Kindle advice

Friend has just bought one of those refurbished ones and is setting it up as we speak.

I have seen where some of you use a gift card to buy, what are the advantages in that, do you not have to use a CC to buy the gift card.

Questions, questions, questions, lol, blind leading the blind, I have a generic reader and just use a CC or PP to purchase.

Re: Kindle advice

You can buy a gift card and it only appears on your credit card once, including the exchange fee...and you can do it when the $ is high.

If you use it often, you get all these little charges on your statement and the rate can change.

I buy one, for say $50, and it lasts me quite some time.

Dance of the Winnebagos is free today on Amazon, this is one of the first freebies I got and read, I enjoyed it and will be reading more of the series.
