Liberals - This is a bit low

The poster, written in Mandarin, states the "correct" way to vote is to put the Liberal Party first.

Labor has accused the Liberal Party of deliberately using the official colours of the Australian Electoral Commission to mislead Chinese-speaking voters in a marginal seat, despite the AEC stating the posters are within the laws.

The posters, which were written in Mandarin and have appeared at booths in the Melbourne seat of Chisholm, state the "correct" way to vote is to preference the Liberal candidate first.

A photo taken by Victorian Trades Hall secretary Luke Hilakari showed a poster printed in the purple and white colours of the AEC tied to a fence next to an official AEC voting banner.

The text of the poster appears to be written in the style of an official instruction to voters:

"Correct way to vote.

"On the green voting card, put preference 1 next to the Liberal Party. The other boxes can be numbered from smallest to highest."

Australian Labor Party state secretary Kosmos Samaras has confirmed to the ABC that the party lodged a formal complaint with the AEC.

AEC state manager Steve Kennedy has told the ABC that the commission has considered the complaint and found the posters did not breach election laws.

"Whilst the AEC would prefer that parties or lobby groups don't use the colour purple, the AEC doesn't own the colour purple and there is nothing restricting the use of this," he said.

The Liberal Party has declined to comment.

Both the major parties are running female Chinese-Australian candidates in the seat of Chisholm after it was vacated by Liberal-turned-independent Julia Banks.

Roughly 20 per cent of the population in the electorate, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, are of Chinese ancestry.

The battle for the seat is likely to come down to the Liberal Party's Gladys Liu and Labor's Jennifer Yang.

I'm not a political animal, but even I can see this is woefully wrong.

How does this not breach election laws?

Re: Liberals - This is a bit low

The way I read it :

Oliver Yates may take Liberals to court of disputed returns over 'deceptive' election signs.

From where I sit - the reported 40% of the electorate of Chisholm - are of Chinese background.

How many of that 40% - are indeed Australian born - over 18 - are attending or have attended Higher Education.

How many of those families - like us discuss - have already made their decision before reaching the stairs of the voting platform.

How difficult it is going to be in a court of law to determine that sign was a cause of deception - other than colour.

Had it been in English - most of us would have read it - and voted as we intended.

It's probably a bit offensive to assume 40% of the 40% - are really that gullible.

as i see it, if even 1 person comes forward and says 'i read it and voted liberal because it told me too' then its a violation.

but thats not the rules as they are, may well be at the next election now.

every election is finding new ways to fool people into voting one way or another, then afterwards closing that loophole.

just like the media blackout when introduced was great, but back then it was just radio, tv and news papers.

now we have the interweb and its open slather even during polling day.

bombard us 60+ times an hour on our computers and phones, no restrictions.

based on what some of the (well educated) Chinese on twitter. are saying.. they found the signs and some of the fliers to be  deceptive and are complaining about it

yes. Oliver Yates is planning to take the case to the court of disputed returns... he is still currently collecting evidence......

how many are Australian born etc.<??..  the last census has all that information

some here just like to 'have a go' at anyone posting anything they dont totally agree with

without ever posting anything themselves or adding anything new to the discussion.

even pointing out spelling errors like they have never made one.
