Why is a thread locked?? if a thread has violated CS policy, is not suitable to be commented on, but is still visible for all to read then what is the purpose of locking a thread?
This post is not discussing any thread in particular but is just a question that really needs to be addressed, why? because:
I'm sure there are many more arguments against this practice.

That thread was funny but it was really just a lot of casual comments it probably would have dropped off the front page in 24hrs. I cant see locking it as any sort of loss to the members here.
That is my opinion which I am entitled to post. Thread replies aren't limited only to people that agree with the opening poster/ post.windrake wrote:
It's threads (posts) like this that bore everyone silly. You have nothing to say, nothing to add, but you're on every thread ever posted. So what if you have an opinion on yourself, nobody cares.
Threads posts...as I was replying to a whining poster I would presume everybody would know that I meant post but inadvertently typed thread. I see the usuals are all too willing to jump in to "correct" me or to make the assumption that I meant my own thread.
I see none of you except goo "corrected" the "affect" "effect" mistake though.
No one.. except AM3 herself?

Hate speech, racial discrimination & every other topic should be discussed if a poster wants to. Inciting hate speech or racial discrimination or any other discrimination is unacceptable though.
Unless you are here 24/7 monitoring every thread, how can you be sure that such content was not posted, reported, removed, resulting in locked threads?

Good question.

I think it is possible. It is also possible for the person who started the thread to request for it to be locked after the topic had gone in a completely different direction. How many times have we seen an interesting topic turning into something nasty and personal?
Why remove the whole thread? I think locking them is not a bad idea.

Some threads that have gone a bit off course get a warning from the mods that it may be locked.. so it is up to posters from there on whether it does or not.
