Look Wut I Got! (Scroller and Photo)

This is Screech.

For the last couple of months we've had a very diligent Tawny Frogmouth pair sitting on their nest close to the house.  We've watched with anticipation and were finally rewarded by seeing a little bundle of fluff popping his head out of the nest.

Then last weekend - DRAMA - I walked outside to see a massive monitor making his way towards the Tawny tree.  Screamed at hubby to come and help, we tried to avert disaster, but the monitor was way too fast for us and scaled the tree.

Mumma Tawny was very panicked, as the monitor came closer to the nest she flew off into a nearby tree.  She gave me a look of absolute desperation HELP ME! (yes, she did!) but the nest/monitor were way too high for us to do anything.  Hubby tried to throw things at the monitor, but I stopped him as the monitor's life is no less precious than the chicks - I didn't want to see the monitor get toppled out of the tree and hurt or killed.  Plus hubby damn near hit my car with a rock. ;\

I put some eggs around the base of the tree so the monitor could see them, in a vain attempt to lure him away from the chick.  We had to go out briefly, so wished the Tawnys good luck.  Alas, when we came back, the nest was empty :_|

Went about our afternoon chores when suddenly I spotted baby Tawny!  Sitting on the ground next to the tractor.  We dropped everything, made him a makeshift nest and put it up in the tree, then caught him and put him in the nest.  We saw Mumma and Pappa Tawny watching nearby.

Cut down a long story, Bubba kept jumping out of his nest over the next three days and Mumma and Pappa abandoned him, so the decision was made to bring him inside to keep him safe from both the monitors and our dogs. (our four young ones would kill him).

He will be released as soon as he can fly properly and learn to catch his own bugs (I am catching them for him at the moment).  He's all puffed up and hating me in the photo, that's a good thing, we don't want him imprinting on us. He's feeding really well though (I hate you, I hate you, yum, yum, more please, I still hate you).

Debra, I went out each night looking for Mum and Dad and haven't been able to find them. They probably aren't far away, apparently they mate for life and return to the same nesting site each year. Unfortunately even if I did find them, it is unlikely they would take the little one back.

OH and I agonized over the decision to bring him inside, we tried very hard to keep him outside with his parents, but with him jumping out of his nest all the time and not being able to fly properly we were left with little choice. We did take a couple of days to make the decision (kept putting him back in the nest we made), but on the third evening he was crying for food (he hadn't done this before) and we couldn't see the parents anywhere.

Our young dogs would kill him if they found him and no doubt that big monitor (and probably all his mates) aren't far away as our house is surrounded on three sides with a creek no further than 200m away.

I don't enjoy the bug thing, most bugs I don't mind, but I feel awful feeding a live animal (even a bug!) to a bird.  Fortunately he will eat freshly dead ones too, so I leave the outside lights on at night and usually have a pretty good supply from there.

I'm just trying to find a cheap large aviary for him over the next day or two so we can move him into an outdoor aviary so he can get some flight and bug catching practice and then hopefully in a couple/three weeks we can release him.

Mainecoon, good on you for saving your dragon. Your story reminds me of one we had with a water dragon, it was when we had just been to look at this property for the first time (prior to purchase).

Hubby was driving and a water dragon raced out in front of the car.  We clipped it, so went back to try and find it to make sure it wasn't going to die a horrible death.

We found it, hubby says "I'll hold the pillowcase (we keep one in the car for this sort of emergency), you grab the lizard (oh, my big brave hero, you!).  Fortunately I managed to grab him just before he zoomed under a fence, when I grabbed him he puffed up huge!  Gave me such a fright, but managed to keep hold and get him into the pillowcase hubby was hiding behind.

We took him to the vet who stitched him up, then were able to bring him back and release him a few days later.  Fortunately he only had a little cut on his belly.

I hate birds in cages too, and I can see how miserable little Screech is in his.  I keep telling him stories about when he is a big boy and can fly and catch bugs, then he will be free outside.

Here is a really sweet and quaint poem about the Tawny Frogmouth

by Francis Duggan :

From lamp of sun he hide himself away

And in timbered country rest during the day

And his camouflage so good 'twould seem that he

Is decaying wood that fork from branch of tree.

As darkness fall from hiding he fly out

And in search of small prey hunt the woods about

And with skink and mouse and insect in his diet

He fill his crop under the cloak of night.

Living in woods throughout Australia north, west, east to south

An owl like bird is the tawny frogmouth

But he lack big eyes and round face of the owl

And all in all a different sort of fowl.

With mottled feathers darkish brown to gray

From lamp of sun he hide himself away

And he fly out when woods are dark and quiet

And hunt for food under the cloak of night.

monsters I think the parents will reject baby birds if they've been touched or the nest has been touched by humans. We've tried to rescue small birds & put them back in their nest only to find that the others attack and peck them  😞

The outdoor cage is a great idea, sort of trying to keep him in a more natural environment. You'll have to keep us all posted on how you go. I look forward to hearing about his learning to fly etc.

Me too Debra9275, it will be really something to see when he spreads his wings:  my guess is he very well might stay around monster's property for a long time even when free.

You're absolutely right, Debra. I took care to use gloves when handling him when we were putting him in and out of the nest, and when I fed him (once) when he was in the nest.  But perhaps Mum & Dad could still smell me, or perhaps they didn't like the fact he had been moved. They did hang around for the first 24 hours, so we had strong hopes, but obviously something went wrong, either upset with the monitor, or upset with us, or both.
