Whilst i have never smoked and would find someone smoking on a train i was riding very unpleasant i really dont like the fact we have a police force who turn minor incidents into life and death outcomes.
when we wind up injuring people or in worst case senarios killing them over very minor incidents i think we have mucked up badly our policing system.
utube is littered with evedence of police taking minor incidents and turning them into these rediculous over the top outcomes.
are police not getting trained how to defuse potential powder kegs?
are police not allowed to just move back from something until the person calms down, even if it means the person leaves?
from many of the videos ive sen the police create a problem then suddenly there can be 5 or 6 police officers sourounding a law breaker provoking a response just so they can take something that maybe was a warning and go on your way to a street fight with multiple police piling onto the perp.
yes, smoking on the train...bad
but a simple "sir, its an offence to smoke on the train please dont do it, on your way" might have been a better use of police time.
now we have a news worthy incident, multipe police officers needing to write reports (how much time and money does that use up?) hospital resources being used up, ambulance peoples time. if he survives a court case?
no wonder we have ever increasing taxes to pay for these things.

Smoking doesn't kill viruses. If it did there would be a lot less viruses in the world today.

As I see it, this guy did two things wrong, he smoked on the train and then wrestled with and tried to flee from the police. Unfortunately, he suffered the injury while trying to run. That's bad luck, but it happened because of his actions. What interests me is why he resisted the police and tried to run away. There's probably more to this that we won't find out.

Smoking may have killed Polio germs, but it sure doesn't kill Lung Cancer.

You're correct Lyndal, smoking doesn't kill viruses. I does significantly reduce your chance of getting Parkinsons though. They're still not sure which of the 60 odd chemicals it is that prevents it, but they do know a lifelong smoker rarely gets Parkinsons. Once you've quit, you run the same chance as everyone else.
I am a reformed smoker. I am not an anti smoker. If people want smoke, go your hardest. If the risks weren't so high I would still smoke. I am anti moron bogans. If someone breaks the law and runs from the police, gets hit by car, bus, truck, train, a bullet, I have zero sympathy. They deserve everything they get.

Just an interesting (to me, anyway) aside.
When it comes to smoking & lung cancer, apparently there is some gene or whatever, which if it is in your DNA which can make you much more susceptible.
I had a DNA test that looked at certain markers and the geneticist was saying that if they found that marker they would inform people.
She explained that it is true that there are some people who smoke all their lives and never get lung cancer, but they probably don't have that gene. Others who do have it are taking a huge risk if they smoke at all.
Mind you, you can get lung cancer from other things. My brother died a couple of years back from brain cancer, which had spread from lung cancer. Also spread to the liver, but it was the brain cancer that took him & it's not a nice way to go.
Now, he was a smoker but when they tested the cells, they found they were melanoma cells!
He had had a melanoma on his back a decade earlier, had it removed-in time, we thought-but it turned out some cells must have escaped and travelled to the lungs as it is only a short journey from the back-then onto other parts of the body.
So melanoma cells can metastisize, if that is the right expression. It's worth having regular skin checks!!

Melanoma can spread very quickly if not treated. Alternatively it can lay dormant. It's a horrible cancer. There's no evidence to suggest smoking has anything to do with it. Usually sun exposure and it's more prevalent in cooler climates.
Reason being, people are generally triggered to put sun block on when they go outside and it's hot (over 30°). Cooler climate you don't get that trigger so you tend to forget about putting it on. The sun is doing as much damage but you're exposed.
Sorry about your brother.

what do we think
a vaccine against lung cancer, good thing or bad thing?
this is a hypothetical question.
