MELBOURNE has taken the crown from Sydney in Australian Traveller magazine's 2013 Readers' Choice Awards. It's been voted the country's best city, as well as the best winter holiday destination and the most romantic city.
More than 1100 Aussie travellers were surveyed for the annual awards, which were announced today.
Although Sydney lost its 2012 "best city" status, it did win the best bar category for Opera Bar and best restaurant for Quay
.
"Considering that Melbourne has always been our culinary capital, that's a big shift," Australian Traveller editor Georgia Rickard said.
Another big winner was the Kimberley in remote WA. It was voted the ultimate dream destination, best adventure holiday destination and best cruise experience.
The award for best town went to Daylesford in Victoria, which Rickard said was a surprise given the tradition for travellers to vote for a beachside destination.
"It says a lot about our changing tastes and how much we're interested in food tourism these days," Rickard told guests at the lunch.
The classic Queensland beach holiday was voted as Australia's best overall travel experience.

Really? How long since you visited Perth?
Now that Perth is the global centre for IT systems designed to support the mining industry, the state government has had to move quickly to change the ethos of the nightlife here. Several years ago the state's major employers went screaming to the Premier complaining they couldn't retain the cream of the world's IT staff because the social life wasn't up to scratch. All these young highly paid hipsters were not prepared to hang around a city that offered little after dark.
That has changed. Dozens of small bars have opened up, new restaurants everywhere, outdoor concerts almost monthly, it goes on & on.
Two years ago the Big Day Out was forced to switch off at 10pm & was subject to noise constraints thanks to lobbying from the neighbours to the local council. The council made a lot of noise about not granting a permit for another BDO. I see it is going ahead next year with all restrictions removed. The council were never even asked.
I love Melbourne & I love Sydney. Sydney for its harbour, the most beautiful city I have ever seen, Melbourne for its liveability, it is such a well dressed place with so much style. But Perth will be surprise them all. For those who know the current CBD as being four blocks one way by about six blocks the other, I see the govenment has gazetted plans for the CBD to extend to Walcott Street in the north & it looks like the Mitchell Freeway to the west. That area will dwarf every other capital city in Australia.
