Australian terrorism experts have questioned the Coalition's move to cut welfare payments to people involved in extremist conduct, saying it could push potential extremists into the arms of terror organisations.
At the weekend, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the government would introduce legislation to stop welfare payments for Australians who are involved in extremist conduct.
Mr Abbott said payments would be cancelled if national security agencies assessed someone as a ''serious threat to Australia's national security''.
He cited the case of Khaled Sharrouf, believed to be fighting in the Middle East, who continued to receive welfare payments after he had fled Australia for Syria.

ALMOST all of the wannabe terrorists who have snuck out of Australia to join jihadist armies in Iraq and Syria were on the dole or some form of welfare payment, The Saturday Telegraph can reveal.
A federal investigation into the welfare status of Australian foreign fighters, prompted last year by revelations in The Telegraph, shows 96 per cent had been on welfare benefits when they fled to the Middle East.
Most had continued to collect payments from Australian taxpayers while training with Islamic State to become terrorists intent on wanting to kill Australians.
The investigation has captured the records of 57 Australians who left the country before October last year to fight with the Islamic State.
Since then, an estimated 50 more Australians have illegally travelled to the Middle East to join IS, with most believed to have been claiming some form of benefit.
A subsequent audit of this group confirmed that most had been at one time in receipt of benefits such as Newstart, sickness, youth and carer’s allowances, as well as the Disability Support Pension.
And that's just the ones we know of. The Radicals. How many of your common or garden variety Muslims are on government benefits do you think might be on g'ment benefits of some sort?
I have no real problem with that, well I kind of have a problem with how many Aussies are on welfare in general, but that's a whole 'nother topic.
When I see a $1mil TV dedicated solely to Muslim matters funded by the community, it does make me wonder how much of that it comes via the Australian taxpayer. And that includes all Aussie taxpayers, your hard-working Muslim Aussies included.
And will they use English sub-titles?
