I will ring a carpet/vinyl store away from where I am and run this issue by them and see what they have to say. I will go back to carpet craft with the cloth and let them see the wipe result, if they carry on with the BS dust excuse I will call their bluff by telling them they will be dealing with Fair Trading unless they wish to sort this out now.

go back into store unannounced, armed with cloth.....ask if they have any more of same vinyl instore......use whatever excuse for them to bring a piece out.....test it infront of them using your cloth. Just a suggestion for an instore demo if they won't come out to you.
Good Luck!

In ye olde days, the manufacturer used to have a stamped name on the surface of the vinyl that was washed off by the end user. It was a sort of rubber-like ink.
Would something similar have been on yours Freddie?
It would be interesting if the grime appears if you wear white socks only (please don't slip and fall). This thought is prompted by the possibility of medicated perspiring feet reacting with the flooring. Even so, this would be a chemical reaction which would not pass some sort of consumer-type law.
Failing that, I would proceed with the advice given by paintsew.

Just adding here: does it happen when Mr tapemeasure man walk around barefooted?
