My vanity just exploded in my new bathhrom

Im so upset. I dont know what to do.

Have been working on this bathroom for a year.

I took this photo  a month ago. Things in place but water not connected

Have had a few plumber problems but they have been fixed.

Today plumber was here connecting final pipes for the vanity. He did it and called me to see. We were standing in front of the vanity when there was a BOOOOM and the glass top exploded.

Plumber says "Oh dont know why that would have happened. Oh well, it was installed. Maybe you can claim it on insurance"

I dont know what to do. Im in shock and in tears.

Hubby bought this vanity 5 years ago. I know theres no way we can replace it.

And now im gonna have to pay a plumbers bill of fitting this vanity and then also to fit a new one

hubby is also sure it was the plumber over tightening the connections.

But, as you say, how do we prove that now that its all in pieces?

topsidesoil- yes, it was made in China. Unfortunately, most things are nowdays :(. It wasnt a flat pack though.

Im still really upset about it.

Will just have to wait for the insurance assessor to come now.

I would have thought a combination of cheap Chinese glass and being placed under tension when connected.

Yikes - that is scary - I am really wary of Chinese made stuff. When my new bathroom went in, the company would not install the ebay purchased toilet for the reason of possible shoddy Chinese quality.

No offense, as we all have different taste, but personally, I would be delighted to see that vanity break and have to go.

Have a look at a few bathroom places and see what they have to offer. There is some nice stuff out there - often the smaller places  are the best. You may well find something you prefer anyway.

I would also assume that the plumber overtightened it, but things like that do just explode, I've had it happen with a shower screen one night. It was the weirdest thing and loud!

It happened to one of my doors once at the front of the house.  The glass just exploded!  It's that safety glass though that explodes into little pebbles.

Then I found the brick at the back wall of the room so it wasn't really unexplained.

Tempered glass, while being strong and with a high thermal resistance has to be carefully fitted so that there are no external stresses applied in situ. Additionally extra care must be taken to avoid scratching/nicking the surface.

I would think it more than likely the plumber, in connecting the pipe(s) stressed the glass., it would only take a pipe seating to vary a degree or two from the plane of the fitting surface and you will have a stress failure in the offing.

I will run with that....having exploded the odd windscreen just after fitting or in an unsuspecting customers shed the night after fitting when the temp dropped a little bit. becaause the glass is not square to the metal and in 100% of the cases the metal wins

A bit insensitive, it wasn't your bathroom that exploded  😐

Sorry to hear daydream. I asked hubby and he also thinks the taps could have been too tight and the "made in China" glass couldn't take the pressure, maybe the glass wasn't properly tempered.

The pipes are connected already so it shouldn't be too hard to get the new vanity put in, a handy man should be able to do it for you. I wouldn't trust that plumber.

yes ash, we do have different tastes and i likes my vanity.

It did break into mostly little pebble size pieces. There was a few tiny pieces though. I had no shoes on so had to wait while the plumber swept a path for me to be able to move.

We have decided we wont get another glass top one. Would be to scared of it happening again.

Yes witchy, we wont be getting the plumber to fit the new one we get. Hubby can do it

A strange coincidence......I had a $5,000 piece of Murano glass extensively crack in a display cabinet in the living room.  At the same time I was having bathroom renovation done.  I had the piece for about 15 years. I was 60 years old.  No other pieces were damaged....just that one.   I just haven't been able to figure it out.

I would think about not having the basin and the glass as an integral piece and using the old vanity but  buy a round basin to fit the "gap" and then think about having tempered glass cut and then supported indepentantly as a surround so that if a breakage occurs again only the surround would need to be replaced.

IMO there are too many variables to expect a glass top to start square and stay square
