You know how it works. Let it all blow over and then put them back in the cabinet. The only way to stop this is a complete overhaul of the system with no room for those accused to manoeuvre. No demotion to the backbench. Throw them out and call a by-election.

Are there any documented cases where Centrelink have discovered - or had it pointed out to them - that  they have been underpaying someone over a period of time and Centrelink have then backpayed the client?

As farmers we dont know what our income will be from one year to the next. We simply use last years figure on our family payment for children documents. After we lodge our tax records, which can be many months after the end of the financial year, the wife either recieves a lump sum for underpayment or a bill for overpayment.

Chameleon, I should have made it clear, I was thinking more specifically about pensions and unemployment benefits.

A hefty fine woudnt hurt either, could be used to provide housing for the homeless

Its certianly not a good look, but it would be very niave to believe it is a problem confined to the Liberal party. Labor and its union buddies have spent decades developing trough sloshing to fine art form.

Our elected pollies of all colours need access to regular, quality travel services. Its an important part of the job. The trick is to provide them with the service without allowing a culture of entitlement and abuse to develop.

I agree with many posts on this thread that it is time for Susan Ley to go, but a more important outcome would be to see the rules tightened and more public scrutiny and accountability of claims to ensure that in future they are only used for government business..

your right, the rules need to be tightened.

but unfortunately the ones who must do the tightening are the very people abusing the rules!

we (the public) thought after bronnie bishops helicopter chapter the rules were to be rewritten and tightened.

but as usual, pollies waited for the smoke to clear and changed bugga all.

and yes, where is our PM? on one hand his govt for all is taking the unemployed, pensioners and disabled to the cleaners telling them they are stealing from the public purse while his own MPs are stealing and saying its all ok, its under the rules.

mr turnbull is hiding as usual.

cant wait for the next poll.   lets not forget his famous tony has lost how many polls in a row?

they just dont get it do they.

hasnt he just said, i was there as minister therefore the person/people/company who invited me must want something?

starts getting into the murky area of payment for favours.

if someone wants to discuss 'business' with an MP they make an appointment, sit at a table with someone taking 'notes' and discuss 'business'

who knows what shady deals might be made at a footy game where no 'notes' are kept on what was said and what prommises made?

No one has said that Labor or any other political party are innocent    ..... I'm sure they have all had their "snouts in the trough" at some time   .... However, I don't remember Labor constantly cutting funding from those who can least afford it, whist at the same time taking care of their "mates" at the high end of town. Correct me if I am am wrong, wasn't wasn't it a Liberal pollie who stated "That the age of entitlement was over"

As far as Turnbull is concerned it would be a pleasant change if he finally decided to speak up and started to actually lead the country, instead of being the lame duck PM he is .......
