NBN Rollout

From now on monthly Ready for Service lists and other key details will only be  available via the NBN Co sales portal, which isn't open to the  public. Instead the government will issue a weekly progress report  indicating the overall number of premises passed, premises serviceable and  services activated. These national figures will not breakdown the rollout to  specific locations. The figures no longer include areas where construction has  "commenced", as Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull says they "do not  necessarily provide a meaningful indicator of progress".

Seems a bit like the weekly reporting of boat arrivals.   Is this the hallmark of this new government - giving us the news they want us to have ?  Where's the transparency ?

I don't agree delays were due to lack of research. No matter who started a project of that scale they were going to come across unforseen problems that would cause delays. Impossible to predict everything that may happen in a project that big, Australia wide.

True, but some people are just sour saps who refuse to consider any benefit because Labor made progress on broadband after years of neglect by the conservatives.  One person argued it was not necessary then went on to tell me how he makes coffee or goes to the shops while he was waiting for pages to sync.  His is a business in which time is money.  I was stunned and decided not to use his service.  I need reliable and secure, not clueless.

Just like Swannie wit his budget surplus predictions. Seems to be the Labor ethos 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Re: NBN Rollout

The plans changed. The trials exceed expectations.  The Telstra deal and ACCC cost almost 2 years. Telstra did not oversee their contractors re asbestos.  Too many greedy corporates want to cash in without doing the work.  Murdoch and Turnbull want it privatised not govt owned. Why? So they make the big bucks and the country does not own the assett on completion.  Just pure greed.

Any project with so many battling to make it fail is bound to have issues but they are basically on budget and had ramped up to 28,000 premises per month prior to the election.

How long did the copper network take to build?

How long did the Harbour Bridge take to build?

How long did the Snowy Mountain Scheme take to build?

How long did the sewer network in Melbourne take to build?

Re: NBN Rollout

A3: "I don't see why that is surprising. No Govt has ever tried to carry out an enormous project like this before. How would any Govt be 100% sure their project would meet construction targets?"

The overall project might be large, and was beyond the ALP  government's  capability,  but the limited rollout  ( failing 3 years of forecasts)  so far is nothing more than a series of small inter-related tasks.

" they hit a lot of  basalt rock, which was unexpected, which caused delays in the rollout. Should they have known what was under the ground before they started the project."

Yes,   area geological information should have  been accessed, and if rock  outcrops are encountered equipment is available e.g.:

CCF member Alex Wolfe of Wolfe Civil in Perth, who has trenched through hard rock for about 300km on new RJ Vincent subdivisions in the city, says the advantage of laying fibre optic cable is that it can be closer to the surface than water pipes, sewer lines and electricity cables.

A3: "No Govt has ever tried to carry out an enormous project like this before."

What nonsense. Start with:

"CHINANET, the world's largest Internet network reaches more subscribers in Asia than any other IP network and provides direct connections to all major global ISPs"

2011, China Unicom, one of the country’s major communications service providers, have announced plans to launch one of the largest fiber broadband access networks to date in China

The government aims to increase the number of broadband users by 25 million and fibre optic Internet users by 35 million in 2013,"

Or try the UK:  Note the cost!

"Penreach, the wholesale infrastructure arm of British telco giant BT, is spending £2.5 billion to roll out 3 million kilometres of fibre and 50,000 new cabinets for a fibre-to-the-cabinet and fibre-to-the-premises open-access regulated wholesale network that will be completed by mid-2014. It will service 19 million premises."

FN:   "Murdoch and Turnbull want it privatised not govt owned. Why? So they make the big bucks and the country does not own the assett on completion.  Just pure greed."  As the ALP NBN you would be hard pressed to find  any   buyers because big bucks are certainly not on the very distant horizon of that snailway enterprise.

PS: Eventual privatisation of NBN Co is bipartisan policy FN

So I guess those "big bucks"  will have to be shared between  pure greedy bipartisan politicians. Myself I will stick with my Telstra shares and thank the ALP,  and the Libs, for elevating the stock value over the last couple of years.

MM you're only wasting you sensible logic on rusted on lefties who hould be happy to see labor waste 100's of billions of our money for their own partisan desires.A true socialist credo.

NBN is a monolith that has gobbled up billions already & is nowhere near any of the many targets dimwit Conroy blathered on about every day. he lied, Gillard lied & the whole of the Labor party lied about it at every turn.

All the horror stories that are coming out of everything the Labor party dabbled in whilst in power is sickening & now we have Shorten going to insist on an ETS.

It's a laugh to read all the defence of this NBN, how it's the greatest, what rot, it's technology & we all know what happens with technology, anybody remember Sony Beta Video recorders ?

I don't think any of us will forget the lies Albo told us on Lateline about this. Turnbull knew but Albo sat there & lied to us all in an election year about the NBN.

Any defence of the NBN is spurious & should be shown up for what it is.
