Have you ever had a close shave involving a famous disaster? For instance, the famous airbus crash that departed South America for France and ended up in the sea, no survivors. One woman who was late for the flight was interviewed about her relief. Two days later she was killed in a car crash in Europe. (I know, it sounds like the plot for Final Destination but if your google the story. it actually is true).
Fortunately, a friend of mine was a little more lucky. She had been a passenger on a first leg of a flight from Frankfurt that had been carrying the bomb that went off over Lockerbie. It wasn't her plane that exploded, I think the bomb was transferred to another plane in London that took off for New York. This happened in the late 80's, investigators said the bomb was so unstable it could have gone off at any time. My friend is still alive and well.
My story is not so exciting. My family, myself, hubby and three kids were passing through Hoddle St ten minutes before the massacre took place. We were coming back from the inlaws (I think it was a Sunday night) and my hubby wanted to watch the last ten minutes of some tv show with his dad but I had a headache and demanded that we leave. He has never argued with me since.
Do you have a narrow escape story?

Ugh
If you were one of the 1.27 million viewers who watched Chris Lilley’s school girl Frankenstein last night you’ll know that quiche means “xxxxxxxx” or “better than hot.”

Thanks for the emails guys but you don't have to ask me to come back and correct the silly mistakes of others:
It should be obvious to all that Ja'mie: Private School girl aired tonight not last night and that no official ratings numbers have been tabulated as yet for tonight's show.
And anyone posting ratings for last week's show would be quite redundant, don't you think?

That's the problem with copy-and-pasters, if they're not displaying lack of experience they are just being redundant, LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I was just going to tell my story about the narrow escape of the 1945 bombing that razed Dresden in one night, but I will refrain after reading all the bickering and accusations of some of the posters.
Shame on you for making a serious thread into a mindless battlefield.

Maybe the trauma of the plane crash and seeing all the strangers around her die was the straw that broke the camels back.
I am not a weak person either but it took me a long time to get over the bombing that occurred on my barracks even though I was not there at the time, I arrived back 2 hours after the bomb went of.
The problem with people in the services is they believe civilians never go through half of what they do - total rubbish of course. Most service men and women never see battle, such as yourself.
I was in a car accident that killed my grandfather and his cousin's wife so don't tell me I haven't suffered through any serious accident.
I also don't think your friend is weak but I do think you are as what right do you have to say you experienced a "narrow escape" when you were hours from a bombing while your friend was actually in a plane crash surrounded by dead bodies? You haven't suffered or been in any serious accident like myself and your friend have been.

Survivor guilt is a very well documented phenomenon - I watched a harrowing example of it on television last night in an interview with a woman whose best friend was abducted and almost certainly murdered 16 years ago, She still blames herself for not being able to save her friend. I think it stems from a combination of relief, grief and empathy.
I am not at all surprised you did not suffer from it.
Lind, I am notl surprised that you don't feel able to post your story here. I would really love to read it though (IYKWIM) and I think it is important it should be told. We are the last generation that remembers the war, and once we are gone so many important personal stories will be .lost forever.

Dear Ele, I will tell my story in another group tomorrow. You know where I mean.

Perhaps, considering your European background, you could explain how Brigitte Bardot isn't Italian and Sophia Loren isn't French? Talk about being wrong!

Oh, I see.........
I don't watch stupid tv.

My my you are becoming bitter, twisted and rude arn't you.
If you took the time to read my original post you would have see that one of my friends died in the bombing, when I got back to the barracks I was actively involved in the rescue and treatment of the other casualty so it was not a near miss for me. As you don't know me it is also a bold statement to make to say I have not been involved in a serious accidents or event.
Personally I don't give a poo whether you think I am weak or not but I think you should show some respect for our active service men and women and whether you like it or not or believe it or not most of them have seen and witness things a civilian would not normally see. Just like our firies, ambos, police etc.
