I think we call it Fretwork here, many of the houses in my town have it

Isn't Fretwork timber...... Lacework iron?......
Our first house was a cute three bedroom cottage.... we added all the Fretwork (timber) to make it super pretty.... white picket fence
with an arbor over the gate.... they are a great house to pretty up (street appeal).... vj's though..... never want to paint another one
again......lol.

But siggie......they have special rollers for vj now...all bumpy like

The only way I would go near them again..... would be with a spray gun!
Anyway...... I no longer have them to spray....... just plaster.

Yeah Fretwork is timber, I thought that's what was being discussed ..... I like both but they wouldn't suit my house, no picket fence either lol

i can only express what it was called where i grew up,i guess. the wrought iron work was called gingerbread too, when i was young..about a thousand years ago ,lol!
no,seriously. ironwork was generally referred to simply as fences, from what i recall.
i live in kansas now,all of it is gingerbread here. my porchposts are considered gingerbread, and they are actually ...well...boring!
but that's fine. i like them anyway!;) they keep the roof up,and they hold my porch shades just fine! ๐

I wondered what you were referring to when you mentioned VJ ceilings, so I googled it. Interestingly enough, the material they use, Medium Density Fiberboard, was first commercially produced in the town I live in, Medford, Oregon.

Vj Really just means vertical join..... the way the boards fit together is with a tongue and groove join and made from timber.
Modern "fake" mdf easy to install sheets can be bought now, however original houses in Australia were made from local timber on the
properties. Painting vj walls and ceilings is hard because you need to gap fill every single join before painting.
