New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.

She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!

We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.

Is there anything I can do?

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

And last post from me tonight  is about the fuss about az's comment -

Her comment applied to one poster in particular. That poster put their 2 cents worth of criticism in (just because that's the way they operate) and hasn't been back since. So az was correct - the post was not about the pup but a general cause-trouble type of post. And it worked cause 4-5 pages later, 'you/we' all stopped talking about my dogs eating disorder and argued over nothing lol.

So apologies to bushie, julia and all those americans (who's names I mix up) for thinking the comments were aimed at them. Not so.

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Thank you - you are very welcome.

Give him/her lots of hugs - lots of treats - not necessarily food.

This makes me so sad - my Maxi - 15 years old - borrowed time - I will be there for her as she has been for me.

Who will I chat to.

Think I will wipe the desk ( sad ) & go get  wine.

have a lifetime of experience in picking up 40 kilo dogs to carry them home because they refuse to move on a walk.

Seems it's true

Of course they don't move - they're paralysed with fear that you'll eat them!

If you are referring to me (my 2c worth) you are mistaken martini. I did come back and apologise for my 'high horse' comments. I haven't been back until now because I had a visitor. Woman LOL

If speaking out for animal rights is 'trouble making' then so be it.  I've never heard of it labeled that before .. oh hang on, I have. Duck shooters of Australia get pretty peeved when people stand up for the rights of birds and ducks to live peacefully without being shot at.

However, I will not apologise for questioning your motives for having an outdoor dog. You'll let the dog in in the morning? While you are all busy getting ready for the day? Umm .. I don't see the dog getting a whole lot of attention in the morning. You won't be walking it. It all seems way too hard already to take it out for a walk. Yep the dog dug a hole. Be ready for more holes. It's what dogs do when they are bored. Then you'll let the dog in after work? What about during dinner? Will you allow the dog to sit under the table and bother you for food? I doubt it.  Personally I see the dog relegated to the backyard for the majority of it's life once the novelty wears off. According to you the dog drools and smells bad. Are you going to want the dog in the house when it's just so much easier leaving it outside. But don't post about the dog howling and barking, chewing your furniture and digging up your garden in a few months time. Unless you want me to come back and post my opinion.

BTW I have an opinion as do you. Deal with it 🙂

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Oh gawd cat - that post was in relation to a post wwaaayyyyy back before you ever piped up.

And you don't have to apologise for questioning anything.

In the same way, I don't need to respond to your queries but I will because I think much of your criticism is unjustified.

This morning when we let her in she had breaky with my husband. Then my daughter woke up and they sat on the couch watching TV together. Then I woke up and gave her lots of rubs. Then she followed me around as i went about my business. Then my son woke up and gave her some good morning pats. I can't see that routine changing.

She will get walked once she is more settled. Whether she wants to or not lol! I don't think you quite understand what it means to take a basset for a walk - it's not too hard for ME (I love my walks) but those photos posted /\ /\ /\ by someone pretty much sums up what walking a basset entails.

She dug a hole because we gave her a big meaty bone this morning. I expected her to dig it in. And I expect her to dig it back up when it is all maggot-y in 3 weeks time. That she dug the whole right where I plated some punnets was also expected...

During dinner she will stay in as she has done for the past 2 weeks. I imagine she will do what she has done every night at dinner so far - just lay there at our feet and listen to the family chatter. She seems wonderfully placid (or super lazy) and has made no attempts at jumping up to get food. She will though. They all do...

You can criticise as much as you want. I have a thick skin and can see yours (and everyone elses) point of view. But I do find one comment objectional -  that our dog is a novelty that will wear off. We aren't novice dog owners. We're not shallow. And we're not morons. So your comment is ridiculous and offensive.

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Some dogs want to be inside some dont, it was cool and windy here today, so I brought my 2 ( daytime ) outside gsd's into the house My male lasted 1/2 hour, my female prob an hour before they wanted to be back outside to  "their" yard and yes they have plenty of warm, sheltered areas out there.
