Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.
She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!
We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.
Is there anything I can do?

Basset doesn't seem at all excited when she sees the rabbit through the glass doors. And the rabbit has stopped thumping and running away.
So this weekend the big introduction is going to happen...
Photos, please.

That's a good idea mugssy.
I might leave it for another week though as she is still very timid and lots seems to frighten her. Including visitors. So I woud hate to be out with her and run into an enthusiatic fellow dog walker.
And I heard her bark for the first time today**. Not as deep and as loud as my previous bassets but will be enough to scare the cats out of the yard.
(** for catmioux - she barked in excitement when my daughter was playing with her and NOT from boredom. I am telling you this because I wouldn't want you to think I am ommitting any details. So the explanation is specifically for you so you don't get upset...
...you're welcome.)

Martini a couple of pages back you mentioned bassets are smelly, have you tried changing the diet?
We feed our dog BARF (I think cat mentioned its what she fed her dog too) she never stinks and her coat is always soft and shiny. Friends of ours have a staffy that was always stinky and had rashes and itchy skin, since they've changed to BARF stinkiness is all gone.

The philosophy behind using BARF, or the hypothesis on which it is based is that the diet a dog evolved to eat - over many millions of years of evolution - is the best way to feed it. This is the hypothesis accepted by most modern zoos or any zoologist concerned with preserving a species of endangered animal. It is not the theory endorsed by pet food companies or the people they train - and that includes unfortunately - most vets.
If you want to feed your dog BARF, it means not feeding your dog cooked and or processed food. That is, not feeding your dog a diet based on cooked grains, no matter how persuasive the advertising. Artificial grain based dog foods cause innumerable health problems. They are not what your dog was programmed to eat during its long process of evolution.

I'm not really here but I do appreciate the details in your story. And I am rather pleased Ms Bassets bark was loud enough to scare the cats out of your yard because any cat who is not confined to their own home or in an outdoor enclosure deserves to be barked at. Don't get me started on indoor/outdoor cats!
You're welcome.

Punch - it is a charactaristic of the breed. They all smell. Even new pups have a distinct basset smell. I think it has something to do with the oils secreted through folds of loose skin? Apparently all hounds have the same smell.
I wish it was something we could change with diet but it makes no difference.
I whinge about it but ultimately I don't care about her usual dog smell. But the thing with the bone today was too much. I almost vomited when I smelled her lol. So I shall give her another day with mangy bone and bath her tomrrow.
