New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.

She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!

We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.

Is there anything I can do?

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

I was going to give her a bath but she still has days to go on that bone. I've been in the back yard with her all afternoon - she buries it for a bit. Then she digs it up. Has a play and roll and a nap. Then she buries it again for a bit. And then she digs it up again. And then...well you get my drift.

If I give her a bath (which isn't scheduled until Saturday lol!) then I keep her inside away from her bone. That's aint no fun for a dog!!

What a dilemma - bath or bone?

And I have no idea what your last comment is about. Who beats and ties their dog up?? Smiley Surprised

Martini, have a look at post #203.  That will explain Cats post.  It is really quite sickening and I am surprised it is still here and no-one has commented.

Hmm. Missed that post first time round (was too long to read). I won't even comment I don't think. Smiley Sad

Needless to say, I can't imagine ever disciplining my animals. They are what they are and I have always put up with the quirks and instincts that make up their characters. Ditto with my kids. Smiley Happy

Some things are best not commented on.

But then again I am a city pet owner so perhaps life is different if you own animals in the country. I dunno...

martini - the solution is called a bath.  🙂   You're welcome.

I can no longer post in this thread due to a previous post about "beating a dog and tying it up for hours" for doing what comes naturally. Don't even get me started. I will now leave quietly. Thank you.

The dog in that thread was given two chances.

Well so far things are looking good.

Basset doesn't seem at all excited when she sees the rabbit through the glass doors. And the rabbit has stopped thumping and running away.

So this weekend the big introduction is going to happen...

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Hey Martini, I used to teach obedience classes, might I suggest you put the dog in the car, have someone drive you to the end of the street or about 250 mtrs, which ever comes first, then get out and walk the dog home. Hounds are soooo difficult to train, noses always on the ground, good luck with your new family member.
We have a dog over our back fence that is alone most days and nights, I have waited 11 years for it to pass away!

Lyn, I missed it too............I can't comment in the way I feel is appropriate...........not sure how many slaps I have left till I'm gone.........

Dogs, cats, whatever, learn more from POSITIVE reinforcement, NOT punishment, and certainly not from debasement!

Now having said my peice, I am out of here because no good can come from my responding to this post.#203.
