According to the news, the fires in Tasmania were caused by an abandoned camp fire...
Thank you tourists X-(
Whoever you were, I hope you don't come back :_|
and of course now another fire was deliberate...

Some people do not realise they haven't properly extinguished a campfire.
I really hope it wasn't delibrately lit.
Oh and freshie, I feel your pain re: tourists. I work in a tourist town so I can empathise with you.
I think the point is that at this time of year no one should light a fire at all!!

I am involved with a tourist information service in my local area, virtually 7 days a week during the tourist season........for the past three years..
I am appallled at the behaviour of SOME tourists, who bring their aggressive behaviour into our peaceful area. Locals tend to stay of roads during this time. Parking anywhere they want to, bully behaviour at roundabouts. Driving down the middle of village roads, even on curves. Fishing and using power boats in no fishing marine sanctuaries....and lighting fires in our national parks when it is post "No Fires" Leaving their rubbish in public areas. Bringing their dogs with them and letting them run loose.
Most are from the cities and they have no idea of rural and semi-rural issues.
The peak season for this appalling behaviour is from Boxing Day until the schools go back.
I have never come across this behaviour from the locals.
In addition to helping tourists I have to deal with constant complains from the locals re the tourists' behaviour.
I had lunch with friends the other day and they were telling me what's been happening with one of their mums who lives in Sorrento. She's lived there for over 40 years. Nowadays she has to get up early and go to the shops as soon as they open so she can get back home before the tourists come out. She is in her 80s and still drives but is basically cut off from leaving her home from about 10am.
The tourists have taken to parking not only on her nature strip but also in her driveway 😮 I just couldn't believe people would be so inconsiderate and rude. Apparantly, when all the parking near the shops and on the side of the road are full they just start either parking over her driveway or in it. Her house is set back from the road with lots of trees at the front so for some unknown reason, these people just feel entitled to park where they like. It's really affected her lifestyle as she can't walk long distances so is prevented from going out during the day in the holiday season as she can't get back into her driveway so and doesn't want to park streets away.
I can't believe some people. She also said it's always the ones driving the expensive cars that do it. Figures.

Incidenttally, I am a volunteer at the visitors centre.
Same down here freshie... We are all very aware of the huge intake of tourists over this peak season and most of us stay out of their way while we can.
I am not saying all tourists are like this, but there is a large section of tourists who really do think we are hicks who don't know and should give them right of way...
I can bet 100 to 1 it was a tourist camp fire, down here there isn't a single person who 1) would camp out in this weather when we have all year to do it and 2) who isn't aware of the extreme bush fire dangers here every summer, as there are up north.
It is the tourists who have no idea that we too get terrible fires 🙂

Right on viewmont.. I have a sign at my gate that says...
"Do not drive in unless by prior arrangement
Religious reps go away"
It isn't hard to find a sign maker on the internet and they aren't expensive Alexander Beetle 🙂

Darki, I did say in my original post "SOME" tourists.
I
Re the parking issue.
It seems that people who indulge in behaviour involving illegal parking, habitual speeding, parking in disabled spots are more likely to cheat, steal, fudge expense accounts, lie. Basically dishonest people without a moral compass. I read a research article some time ago about this phenomena. They have no regard whatsoever for other people’s rights or rules and regulations.
It is these tourists who indulge in the anti social behaviour I mentioned in my original post.
We have had a huge fire at Janies Corner (2km south of Forster), which is a beach only accessible on foot, in a national park.. Evidently there were some visiting surfers camped there, illegally. Locals have no need to camp out. I am waiting for the results of the cause of this fire from a close friend in the RFS.

I know freshie, it was me who was generalising, not you and so i thought I had better fix that before someone comes in and takes delight in hitting me over the head 🙂
Locals have no need to camp out.
Right on, and neither do they down here! |

What a silly statement to make..... You have never been a tourist? We are all tourists at some time are we not? Tourists come from all walks of life.....country, city living.

Au contraire Twinkles. Tourists are not interesting in local issues. They are just there to have a good time, which is understandable. They are not interested in the bush fire issue because it is not on their home ground.

Stating the bleeding obvious. It is the behaviour of tourists which is the issue.
