According to the news, the fires in Tasmania were caused by an abandoned camp fire...
Thank you tourists X-(
Whoever you were, I hope you don't come back :_|
and of course now another fire was deliberate...

I know it a different state but the Police have charged 3 teenagers for lighting fires near Newscastle.

In a total fire bann????

I am not trying to justify the behaviour but maybe they didn't know there was a total fire ban or as it was an abandoned campfire maybe it was lit before the ban came into force.
Either way, I hope the ones responsible realise they caused it all.
Accidental or deliberate, the end result is all the same.:-(

Here is the latest I could find on the fire..................heaps of pictures.

I also heard one of the Tasmanian fires started by a dry lightening strike.
If the fire was started by an abandoned campsite I hope it was accidental............and not carelessness.

I am extremely mad already carly&judy... I have seen so much destruction due to people thinking we are just the country hicks down here...
When I was an amublance officer the number of SUVs that would sit in the middle of dirt roads and wonder why they hit a car coming in the other direction was awful - and so were the injuries.
Two years ago a driver came out of a side grocery store (Merediths, do you know it?) but stopped half way across to look at his map.. a truck coming around a bend saw him, avoided him and an on coming motor bike copped the lot... there were bits of bodies everywhere... needless to say the confirmed tourist was uninjured and drove off entirely unsuspecting...
We get thousands of tourists down here in the Christmas holidays and you can tell them a mile away... they either drive too fast or so slowly while they look at maps or the views that they are very easy to spot.
That someone down here would LEAVE an unattended camp fire in a TOTAL FIRE BAN is beyond my belief.. but it apparently happened.
The other fire was apparently started deliberately and god alone knows who did that one.X-(

That was in the news from the beginning but no mention of tourists. Just said a fire had not been completely extinguished Wednesday night before the fire ban was declared.
Plenty of Tassie people light fires and holiday in the coastal areas.
Lightening is blamed for the one near here.

I am involved with a tourist information service in my local area, virtually 7 days a week during the tourist season........for the past three years..
I am appallled at the behaviour of SOME tourists, who bring their aggressive behaviour into our peaceful area. Locals tend to stay of roads during this time. Parking anywhere they want to, bully behaviour at roundabouts. Driving down the middle of village roads, even on curves. Fishing and using power boats in no fishing marine sanctuaries....and lighting fires in our national parks when it is post "No Fires" Leaving their rubbish in public areas. Bringing their dogs with them and letting them run loose.
Most are from the cities and they have no idea of rural and semi-rural issues.
The peak season for this appalling behaviour is from Boxing Day until the schools go back.
I have never come across this behaviour from the locals.
In addition to helping tourists I have to deal with constant complains from the locals re the tourists' behaviour.

I heard that news too, about the camp fire. Anyone that lights any kind of fire at this time of year is an idiot!!....... Stupid careless behavior is often the cause of big fires.
.....using angle grinders, driving in long grass, flicking a cigarette, all stupid irresponsible behavior.

Some people do not realise they haven't properly extinguished a campfire.
I really hope it wasn't delibrately lit.
Oh and freshie, I feel your pain re: tourists. I work in a tourist town so I can empathise with you.

We didn't even dare light our charcoal barbeque these last few days, seemed dangerous just doing that ... 😮
