Orthotics

I can't remember a time when I didn't have some pain in my feet, but over the last couple of years it has become bad enough that I went to a podiatrist and now have orthotics in my shoes. They seem to be helping, but now I find I can't go without them without extreme pain.
Am I destined to wear shoes that accommodate them for the rest of my life now? I so much like to get around in bare feet or at most thongs in the summer, I am really dreading the next six months.
Any suggestions?

You can get orthotic thongs.  Orthaheel is one brand.  Google orthaheel - images

Have a look at the Viera range of shoes....they have some nice sandals that accommodate orthotics.  They are a bit pricey though.

Also Google shoes for diabetics...there are some great styles out there that cater for orthotic inserts as foot problems are common in diabetics.

Orthotics

I had orthotics for a long time and stop wearing them after a few years. I pronate to the outside of my heels from being a little bow legged. I got tired of wearing them. I eventually went to a sports store and bought theirs and they seem to be doing the job, and they are more comfortable than orthotics.

My eldest and youngest wear orthotics. ...have done since they were young.  One has a high instep the other flat footed. Neither wear thongs on a regular basis and prefer the comfort of the orthotics which if designed correctly will fit a range of footwear.  They both have the flexible cork inserts made to fit their paticular foot after a plaster cast was taken. Maintained yearly for free for life

What is the reason for the pain?

I have osteo arthritis in my feet and have orthotics, have worn them now for about 2 years and the relief is amazing.

I was scared to try without them but now I can wear ordinary shoes and good quality runners with no pain, for a short time.

I buy homy ped shoes usually when they are on sale, so around $95 but............ I think most of them are ugly and chunky.

Maybe go back to your doctor and find out what the pain is from and correct that if possible?

Today I am off to find some sandal type thongs/shoes that are pretty and comfortable! also Rivers do a range with removable innersoles that accomodate orthotics.

Have you had your feet x-rayed?..... if not ask to..... you sound like you have bone spurs in your feet.

If you do have bone spurs and the pain is severe, ask for cortisone shots. If your doctor doesn't do them.... find one who does.

The pain relief can be life changing.
