Oscar Pistorius

I'm surprised there's no thread already about this. Is it because it's not an Australian case?

Yep, they did Stawka. It took a while and delayed the trial. Found he had no psych issues or mental health problems.

No. Just stupid. Full of himself. Not intrinsically evil. Deserves to be punished but not demonised.

Craig Spence, the International Paralympic Committee director of media and communications, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Oscar’s done a great deal for the Paralympic movement. He’s been an inspiration to millions but obviously his priority now is to see [what] the judge decides. And then if he wishes to resume his athletics career then we wouldn’t step in his way – we would allow him to compete again in the future.”

A statement from the IPC added: “Following today’s verdict, our thoughts remain with all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy, in particular the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp who sadly lost her life in this incident.”

Analysis: Will Pistorius return to stardom?

Acquitted of murdering his girlfriend, S African double amputee athlete still has a long and bumpy legal road ahead.

It seems unlikely that Pistorius will return to a professional sporting career. "There's a high likelihood that Oscar will disappear into obscurity," said de Wet. "His immediate future is likely jail time and then after that, he can try to pick up the pieces of his life."

I totally disagree with you.  He does deserve to be demonized.  He killed a woman.  And there is no doubt in my mind, that he didn't think it was an intruder in that bathroom.  You will never convince me that it wasn't a case of him losing his temper.   Reading some of the things that have been written about him, including the comments by his ex-girlfriend, make me realize just how evil he really is.  I hope they give him the maximum sentence allowed.

There was a discussion on the radio this morning with a legal expert in SA.  He was explaining why many of the legal fraternity there believe that the judge was incorrect with her verdict.  That OP did have intention to kill someone and because of that the verdict should be murder.  He also said that the mandatory sentence for culpable homicide was 5 years, but that the judge could give a non-custodial sentence at her discretion.

July 2014

Dr. Jonathan Scholtz, a clinical psychologist, found no evidence that Pistorius had a history of 'abnormal aggression or explosive violence' but concluded he has a record of feeling insecure and vulnerable, particularly when he is without his prosthetic limbs, defense lawyer Barry Roux said.

Roux on Wednesday read excerpts from the report, which was compiled during a 30-day observation period at a state psychiatric hospital and included a report compiled by three psychiatrists.

The report said the double-amputee runner is suffering depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and 'his condition is likely to worsen' if professional treatment for those conditions is halted.

It also concluded that the Paralympian does not show narcissistic traits linked with violence towards women and 'rage-type' murders.
