PHONE TAPPING

Should Tony Abbott apologise for the Labor parties phone tapping when Rudd was PM ?

Or should KRudd stand up and apologise for what happened under his leadership ?

Aparently most countries participate in phone tapping and if the Indonesian government is upset and want to take it furtther then withdraw tthe aid Australa gives Indonesia and encourage people to stop holidaying there, that would give them something to think about. Typical bluff tactics from the Indonesians. I am not condoning the practise but they are getting a bit to precious over the whole thing.

Keep it nice, I might cry if you write anything upsetting (like not)

Re: PHONE TAPPING

I think the indonesions have every right to be extremely upset, private phone calls should be private, the wives for a start should be off limits.

I don't think he should apologise.  It was Kevin Rudd's fault but I think he should look at the way Obama handled Merkel's phone tapping.

Not sure why any country or person would be shocked.

Its been happening for a very long time.

In a 2004 interview, retiring Indonesian intelligence chief General Abdullah Mahmud Hendropriyono said his agency tapped Australian civil and military communications and politicians' phone calls.

General Hendropriyono said he presumed Australia did the same thing to Indonesia. "She is silly if she doesn't do that, you know"

If apologies are due should John Howard ,Bob Hawke apologise too ?

Our PM represents us as a Country.

He chosen words have not been very diplomatic.

Indonesia summons Australia envoy as spy row spreads

November 1, 2013

Indonesia has summoned the Australian ambassador in Jakarta over a report his embassy was part of a vast US-led surveillance network, as the spying row that has soured US-Europe relations spread in Asia.

As Secretary of State John Kerry admitted US spying had sometimes gone too far, concern was growing in Asia, with China among countries demanding answers from Washington over reports of clandestine surveillance.

The row erupted in the region after the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, amplifying an earlier story by German magazine Der Spiegel, this week reported a top-secret map leaked by fugitive intelligence analyst Edward Snowden showed 90 US surveillance facilities at diplomatic missions worldwide.

Its reports focused on secret US intelligence facilities in Asia and also said Australian diplomatic posts were being used to monitor phone calls and collect data as part of the American surveillance network.

Widespread reports of US National Security Agency spying based on leaks from Snowden, including that the agency was monitoring German Chancellor Angela Merkelโ€™s phone, had already sparked a major trans-Atlantic rift.

But the latest reports have brought the scandal to Asia, a region where Washington has been seeking to improve ties its in recent years to counter growing Chinese dominance.

Indonesia has so far been the most vocal nation in Asia in voicing anger over the reported spying, earlier this week summoning the top US diplomat in the country over reports of clandestine surveillance from its embassy in Jakarta.

Why? they have been monitoring private calls and people for a long time now, no one in immune to it.
