Is unconditional patriotism a desirable attribute or not?

Someone very wise once said to me (it wasn't a someone though; it was a lesson from my high school history book) That we need to be careful to make the distinction between Patriotism and Nationalism. because exaggerated feelings of Nationalism can lead the people so easily into War.
We also need to make a distinction between patriotism and jingoism: extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy. (Merriam Webster Dictiounary.)

Jingoism is Abbotts idea of Patriotism.

Unbribled and misplaced nationalism like what we saw from nazi party. Unbridled joy in murder, celebrating death like isil.

I'd hardly call Stanfords online academic published material "X for dummies."
I mean, sure, it isn't quite in the same league as the Murdoch rags benchmark, but I am sure you might still be able to understand it.

Australian patriotism? well many on here are not born here so they have no loyalty to this country.
You see that every day on here, how they spit on our parliament, our way of life and our values, defend our enemies and hate this country and its culture.
They have loyalty to socialism and radical theories that assuage their envy and racism, their bigotry.
The real Australian patriot is the men and women who fight for our country, stand up and be counted, defend our democracy and our peoples, also the silent majority who work and raise their children with morality and ethics and call out weasle words from the chattering classes.
Boom.

I was referring to the mindless massacre of unarmed men women and children.
You mean what's happening at the moment with isil and the African rebels who are killing and raping indiscriminately? or you mean war in general over land and ideologies.
Many returned personnel suffer conscience and self recrimination for their deeds but what is the answer to creeping barbarism.
It is the nature of humanity to have a conscience and that is our saving grace, what stands us apart from animals and barbarians.

I didn't realise patriotism was held in contempt, has a negative meaning or anything else to that effect.
Just goes to show how little we know of what many on here really are like and how they percieve the wider community, how they hold them in contempt.
They call out patriotism as jingoistic racism, nationalism.....hmmmm does that say more about them that the one's they are deriding?
