Comebacks by 63-year-old musicians are rare, not least by ones who ditched their rock ’n’ roll career to enter federal politics, as Garrett did on the Labor ticket in 2004. That was two years after the singer said goodbye to the band that had occupied most of his adult life, Midnight Oil.
Now, in the space of just a few weeks, the singer has risen again, not once but twice, with the news that the Oils will tour internationally next year and that their frontman is about to release a solo album, A Version of Now, in July.
“No one is more surprised than me,” says Garett, more in the context of his solo outing than the Oils’ imminent return. Speculation on that has been rife since before he quit politics in 2013.

I've always liked Peter Garrett and felt he would have done much better in politics if he hadn't been caught up in Rudd's Pink Batts fiasco.

Must be running short of money. Has to earn a crust somehow.
I wonder just how many fans are left to follow Midnight Oil?

That's a bit kind - 'caught up in it'
It was his portfolio and he dropped the ball.
I don't think he was paying the slightest bit of attention to it at all.
Thought it could run without supervision, obviously

I heard his new single two days ago and my only response is .....

Gee some have short memories..

Don't know about "short memories", but I used to listen to his music when he was part of Midnight Oil and he really had something to say through his music.
As a politician, he became just like the rest of them, and in my opinion, he would have been far better of to stay with his music career, strange as it was evolving.
Now, to me, he just sounds desperate.

Sorry, Tas, but he's an idiot - always was (better put IMO)

I have no argument with that Stawks, although I thought the band was good in terms of the music and a little of what he had to say a long time ago, but once he went into politics, he went over the top and lost it all (whatever it all was).
Shame really, because he chose not to use his brain, just seemed determined to become a Peter Pan ...

What I mean by 'short memories', is that as a politician, he made a great musician.

Thanks for that youcandoit, I wasn't quite sure how to reply, but yes, I do agree with you re him being a good musician at that time in the past.
Perhaps he'll revert right back to those times once the band starts touring, I don't know, but they'll have to do a lot better that what he's just done as a 'comeback' introduction single I think.
