Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

to monman.....who as usual, really doesn't know what he is talking about, when he replied to icyfroth:

"Information about the missing MH370 flight gathered from US spy satellites at a military base in Australia is being withheld from the Malaysian government, according to reports."

What silly nonsense, but please tell me why would they withhold information?

Flight MH370: Malaysia wants access  to data from Pine Gap

March  20, 2014

The New Straits Times  on Wednesday led its coverage of the missing  plane with a story referring to Pine Gap as a "super-secret" installation in the  barren Australian heartland that could solve the puzzle of the mystery  disappearance.

The newspaper quoted Mr Hishammuddin as saying Malaysia would "appreciate" if the US could provide investigators with data from its facilities in Australia.

"Although he did not mention the two facilities by name, the New Straits  Times believes that he was alluding to the Pine Gap and Jindalee [radar]  facilities," the newspaper said...........

P007 what exactly do you imagine the capabilities of  Pine Gap are? Imagine  is a poor choice of words for you, try researching the facility.

Do you actually consider that any government controlled organisation would withhold  pertinent information concerning a tragic incident such as this, or that it could be kept secret.?

As for Jindalee OHR, I have already covered that, in fact I thought you might be quite excited over its possible use, considering it utilises natural ionospheric reflection,  whereas HAARP produces its own very small and localised HF induced ionisation.

No?, OK,  something easy then:  could you explain why you consider a ULB would be so easy to locate?. Or would that be kept secret by "them" also?

Off topic - but mention of OHR reminded me of the "Russian Woodpecker,"  and the entertainment it used to afford some of us in our Ham Radio days.

It also was over the horizon radar and its signal blip would often encroach onto the ham radio frequencies. We used to chase it up and down the band, transmitting a constant stream of morse code ees dot...dot...dot... until it tgave up and went away again.

Malaysia Flight 370 path. Radar fiddled with.....

It was shot down plain and simple. As soon as the trailing "boogie" let it's "birds fly" and received that it got a confirmed hit, it turned off it's APX-72 IFF Transponder and POOF! Disappeared.
