Plane missing with 236 people on board

Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Last I heard, the latest debris found was not part of the plane. They are still no closer to finding the wreckage or the black box.  

Did anyone watch 60 mins on it last night?

yes icy, I happened to turn on the box briefly and saw a bit of 60mins ......my heart went out to the NZ wife (living Perth WA) of missing hubby passenger. ....and two wee little boys too.

An Air Asia pilot has been suspended after posting on Facebook an accusation that the government of Malaysia was "hiding facts" about missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. While many pilots were defending the character of the missing men, a senior pilot demanded that the Malaysian government stop making definitive statements without actually having physical confirmation that the Boeing 777 has crashed.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported March 27 that an Air Asia executive, Tony Fernandes, confirmed through a Twitter post that a senior first officer had been suspended after effectively accusing the Malaysia government of a cover-up.

"The supposed debris...isn't even confirmed to be from the plane yet! Show us the proof and then tell us MH370 has crashed," wrote the pilot on Facebook.

He went on: "Till then stop hiding the facts! It's obvious even to a blind man that there are tons of info the government definitely knows and isn't sharing yet!"

Fernandes noted that the pilot, whose name was not revealed, was suspended pending an investigation.

and it's now been over 3 weeks since Flight MH370 and all onboard 'disappeared'.

heard on the news last night that its really up to malaysia to recover anything and the black box which is actually orange has only a 30 day battery life

theyre thinking of upgrading them to a 90 day battery life now

I only saw bits as well but saw the interview with that young mother. I was disappointed that we have sunk to watching people grieve on television as entertainment . A friend who studied journalism in the dark ages says that they were trained never to approach the family of tragedies such as this, but now it seems that anyone is fair game.

One thought that occurred to me was that the Chinese families would have not only lost a loved family member but it could be the end of their whole family with the one child policy.

Yes. I have Chinese relatives. Contrary to some posters on here who suggest that I have an agenda or that I am a conspiracy theorist or that I blame the US at every opportunity etc.....my main aim here is to question the utter BS being thrown down by 'them' as reasons for this plane and all occupants disappearing without a trace, why 'their' satellitse and all other info and data cannot be made public to show the exact location of this flight MH370 and all on board........etc, why 'their' interests are more important than any/all the missing passengers?

This whole thing is no less than a crime IMO.

There apparently is no identifiable debris, no wreckage, no proof of the plane having crashed......no bodies-yet 'they' state that all is lost.

 Information regards the whereabouts of plane, crew and passengers is being withheld.

This current search in the Southern Ocean IMO is a furphy.....utter BS!

The one child policy thing is old hat! Besides, does not matter the country, the creed, the colour, the family history.....these are all human beings whose whereabouts are being covertly and deliberately kept from their family members, friends and relatives.
