Politician get yet another pay rise to put in the bank.

The independent Remuneration Tribunal determined the two per cent pay rise, the first in 18 months, for all federal MPs - including the Labor opposition.

They obviously forgot last years pay rise:

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/federal-politicians-handed-pay-rise-and-tax-cut/news-story/9fb355f...

And all their other increases:

It had come after a string of extraordinary pay hikes that boosted MPs salaries by $50,000 in just 18 months.

PRIME MINISTER MALCOLM TURNBULL

From July 1 2017: $527,684,add another $10 k on top and it's completely false economy to give someone a pay rise for not doing

their job and actually making it worse for low income earners.

One of the richest politicians on Earth who isn't doing the job that he's paid for.

It is an absolute disgrace that at the same time our politicians are raising taxes on struggling families and we have over $500 billion in debt our political class is rewarding itself with more lavish pay rises.”

Fresh penalty rate cuts took effect on Sunday and the changes are estimated to affect 700,000 workers across Australia.

So they are increasing the pay to rich politicians who will bank most of that increase and taking it away from

workers that spend most of their money,(and they wonder why we have that debt).

They must be the most selfish "people" on the planet as they are like give us a pay rise so we can put this country further into debt

but that's fine it wont affect them as their pay is guaranteed even when they "retire".

Does good ol' Mal think his job is more important, more stressful than POTUS?

The President's last pay rise was in 2001

Since 2001, the president has earned a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.

US political salaries tend to be low by our standards, but it's a much wealthier society.

Their pollies have much greater opportunities for "income enhancement" and "career advancement" before, during and after their terms of office.

Their electors also seem happy to accept a much greater degree of open personal and political corruption than here (in fact, they don't even seem to think that a lot of it is corruption); almost the only thing verboten is giving a quid pro quo for money actually received during the term of office, and even then only if it's particularly socially undesirable.

Of course, in Australia, the post-career payoff (eg directorships, consultancies, etc) for corrupt dealing whilst in office, particularly on the part of Liberal Party pollies, is and always has been pretty widespread, but our defamation laws and corrupt media control mean that it's seldom reported.

And if and when the truth looks like coming out, you can always count on your mates in government to make sure that the bodies stay buried.

Come on down, ASIO, Woodside, Alexander Downer and Christian Porter; bad luck for you, Witness K and Bernard Colleary.

The population of the US is more then ten times that of Australia and he gets less then our PM.

That shows just how bad the system for setting pay rises for polisitcians is.

There must be some correlation between them and the independent Remuneration Tribunal who approve their pay rises.

They are ex business people and an investment banker, and would probably only know what they would like/want?

Independent body but paid by the government?

Governor‑General of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, make the following regulation.

For section 12 of the Act, the following fees are prescribed:

                     (a)  for the President—$89 090 per year;

                     (b)  for other members—$43 095 per year.

They get allownces on top.

The question I would like to ask is why did they need a pay rise and why do they only need to ask and it's autonatically given to them.

At any time have they been refused a pay rise after they asked for one

The unemployed, pensioners, low income earners and everyone else didn't get a pay rise and they need it more then any stuck up

politician that's living the high life at the tax payers expense.

In Victoria the polticians set their own wages:

https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2018/02/vic-pollies-grant-big-pay-rise-stagnate/

The MPs’ windfall — amid soaring living costs for Victorians — comes as politicians prepare to again change the law on pay and entitlements and create an independent remuneration tribunal. That is likely to see their base salaries increase yet again, in return for scrapping murky entitlements that have been rorted…

Independent remuneration tribunal must stand for ask and you will receive whatever you want as ripping of tax payers is what we do.

Staff are on a good wicket as well, especially if they are part of the PM's office.

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/pm-malcolm-turnbull-defends-pay-rises-for-his-staf...

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/malcolm-turnbull-used-a-special-law-to-give-some-parliamentary-st...

The Prime Minister is supporting cuts for low-paid workers, he’s imposing taxes on 80 per cent of the labour force and the labour market, he’s providing tax cuts for the very wealthy and billionaires, and yet he’s found a way to provide many of his staff very significant wage increases at a time when wage growth has collapsed.

It just doesn't make sense as it's all about money for the rich that don't need it and don't spend it and reducing the money to everyone

else that spends over 90% of money they receive so they can afford to live.

The rich can afford to pay the extra taxes as they should but the rest of the country is heading in the wrong direction.

How can he not see that he's destroying the country and not building it.

Which is 100% tax deductible which helps offset his other income and both he and Lucy receive hefty tax free directors fees from the foundation. The recipients of the donation are hardly poor and needy ( Sydney Biennale, Sydney’s Scots College are some, there are probably some really deserving ones as well)
