Consider this.
JOOLYA!! knows that a tilt at the leadership is on the way, to squash it she cons Crean to build up Kruddie's chances and to con Krud that he has numbers that he can add.
All the while feeding false info to the Krud.
JOOLYA!! wanted another Krud scalp to hang off her belt and to humiliate him even more by thrashing him at the cacus ballot.
Krud, not being as stoopid as he was thought to be declines to contest.
Crean is covered in egg and so as not to confirm the con he goes to the back bench.
JOOLYA!! does not get her Kruddy scalp an the party looks stoopid.
More supporters are shed.

Even Peter Hartcher asks the question in todays paper.
Was it all a set up?
"Indeed, at one point the Rudd group feared that Crean, a longtime friend of
Gillard's, was actually operating as a covert Gillard agent. Why? Because when
Crean called on Gillard in her office for a protracted meeting on Wednesday
night, he did not tell the Ruddites. They found out indirectly. And when asked
about it, Crean did not tell them what he had discussed with her. Was Crean
being sent to blow up the Rudd bid?"
