I had a couple of cockatiels for over 10 years and it took about a week to get them used to wearing a harness, once they realised that the harness meant really good things they used to bring it to me to put on them and then I would have to take them for a walk.
One of them used to put herself into the cage every night about 8pm and there she would stay until the morning. The only time they were caged was at night because I didn't want them in the bed with me in case I rolled onto them.
The femalee loved to go for a walk standing right on the visor of my sunhat and the harness was great because she would fall off (frequently) but as I had the harness she could come ot no harm.
I used ot put the birds in a tree in my mother's backyard and they would play for about an hour then be so tired they would have to be carried back inside for a sleep.
They would travel on public transport in my handbag.
Birds are easy to have around if you put in time not just training them but getting them used to noisy surroundings.
