Q for Martini.... or anyone who knows colours

We got tiles for the bathroom that were on sale at a hardware store that was closing. It was only after they were attached to the walls that it became apparent that they are not an exact colour match.  They are the same tiles, with a subtle difference. One lot has a slight grey tinge while the other looks more cream. 

The question is what colour paint would be best to avoid emphasising the difference?

They're large white tiles with a slight marble effect.  White paints seem to highlight the difference.

What an absolute nuisance for you.  Let me state, I'm not a professional colourist in giving my opinion

My first thought was the palest, palest olive green (i.e. white with a tinge of olive green).

Then....you mentioned a marble effect to the tile, is that marbling the exact colour in both batches?  If so, I would choose that marbling colour and go for the lightest hint of that.

Well that sucks.

All tiles have a dyelot/printlot number so you know that they have been printed at the same time. Shame your tiler didn't pick up the difference.

Anyway, any colour is going to highlight the difference because colurs are either coool or warm and it sounds like your tiles are one of each. If you pick a cool paint then the warmer coloured tiles are going to be accentuated and vice versa. So whatever you pick has to go with both and has to be strong enough to take the focus away from the tiles.

So I think you have 2 choices

1. a wallpaper. That way the focus of the walls are on this instead of your tiles. There are some amazing wallpapers out there these days and they really soften bathrooms.

2. you test out a variety of greys and taupes. I suggest grey because it will pick up the marbled streak in your tiles. But I suggest you get at least 6 different sample pots ($6-10each) up to see what works best. But this is a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack.

If it was my house I would be going with option 1.

I think that first one would probably hide it best  😄 

The room is less than 2 metres each wall.  We put a cavity sliding door and tiny vanity which doubled the floor space.  You don't notice the tile colour at first glance but it stands out a lot with some colour samples.  The kids want aqua paint.  I'm not so sure about that.  Have to undercoat first so will keep thinking about it and paint the ceiling white  😄

Just do off-white fgs, it goes with everything. Get coloured towels for contrast. Sheesh. Dont' you watch the house rules shows?
