RIP Ron Clarke

From 1965 to 1972 he held every world record for middle distance running, a feat unmatched by any other athlete.

"But it was Ron Clarke's sportsmanship that defined his running career," the prime minister said.

Mr Shorten said Clarke's tenacity, determination and character were tested but never conquered.

Many reflecting on his passing would have the image of a young man clad in white carrying a sputtering Olympic torch and the hopes of the nation into the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1956.

From the above link -

"Incredibly Ron wasn't even given a ticket to the opening ceremony," Mr Shorten said.

"After he lit the torch he took a train and bus to his uncle's house and watched the rest on TV."

For once I agree with the duckheads in government/opposition.

"But it was Ron Clarke's sportsmanship that defined his running career," the prime minister said.

Mr Shorten said Clarke's tenacity, determination and character were tested but never conquered.

Thanks grandmoon for posting the above.

RIP to a true gentleman.
