Ebay have removed listings, worldwide, in the last couple of days
for Golliwog/Golly citing the 'hateful or discriminatory policy.'
Aunt Jemima dolls (mammy dolls) have also gone
The weird part is, there was a sub-category in Dolls/Bears for Golliwogs
All things Golliwog have disappeared.
Books including ones by Enid Blyton have gone.
It's ok to sell them, just don't put golliwog/golly in the title.
I have been informed that I need to be educated on the matter,
and have been given links to things like the Jim Crow Museum
http://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/golliwog/
My own opinion is, I love gollies. I can see no relevance to them in Australia.
I think they are/were a much loved toy with no underlying racial tones.
A lot of people may be upset by the images, but I think Ebay has just made
them worth a lot more money on other sites.
I'm not looking for an argument, and you won't get one.
I would just like some more opinions.
It started on the Selling Boards
http://community.ebay.com.au/t5/Selling/Item-specific-Listing-Removed-Sick-Of-It/td-p/1834945
I would hope that opinions do not run too hot, and turn into arguments.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Many Australians also find "gollys" offensive, including myself, indigenous leaders and people, as well as other groups and people in the broader community.
I am sorry you can see no relevance. Maybe if you were black and had been called a gollywog in a hateful way you may think differently.

And yet, many more don't. By your definations we should ban cats, pigs, mice, etc, all of which can be and have been terms of endearment to children over the years. But you just let that pus simmer.
*edit: took out a word, because I was heading one way, then went another, my bad.

I don't understand your line of reasoning ?

Do you know what its like
To be a red head in a world
Of black Brown and blonde
Heads
No you don't
You wouldn't and I bet the
Thought has never crossed
Your mind eithet
To be called carrots, Bleuy,
Red , freckles and whatever else
Anyone can imagine
Black people do not have
A monopoly on prejudice
You only think you do
You can take what you are
Blessed with and turn it into
Whatever you like
Or you can wallow in self pity
And blame the rest of
Humanity for what your life
Becomes
And that is not exclusive
To any race either

I am concerned that the word Golliwog was removed by the racist community on e-bay, not the sellers who grew up playing with Golliwogs as children like myself, who never saw it to be any different to a teddy bear or doll. This is my childhood that is being brought into coflict.
Enid Blyton wrote "The 3 Golliwogs," a childrens book I read as a child. We all know about
"Noddy and Big Ears," We loved "Toy Town," as children, it was even on TV watched by millions of kids. "The Golliwogs were part
of the show. I collected the Golliwog cut out coupons from the "Robinson Marmalade Jars in England. You sent them into the company
and they sent you back a metal Golliwog badge . Queens Elizabeth has her personal appointment to Robinsons Marmalade stamped
on the jar today, does that make her "Racist, or Hateful?
It seems to me that the world has gone crazy if people want to insite Racism please do not bring it to e-bay. I was told by an e-bay officer that it was the e-bay Community that felt the word Golliwog was racist. I am part of the e-bay community as well, so are the
other sellers selling their Golliwogs. We were never asked for our opinion, and beleive the term Golliwog is a discription of a toy,
not a racist slur.
Bring back "The Golliwogs, get rids of the racists who insight this sort of rubbish in the first place.
I am interested in none racist comments.
I am interested in other peoples comments.

true.
The Australian toy manufacturer Elka continues to "proudly" produce golliwogs, and supplies them to Darrell Lea.
