.....  and Ukraine, well, what can you say about that mess.  Ukrainians were never happy to be part of Russia and felt like 2nd class citizens; they always resented Russians who were living in Ukraine.  When  Ukraine separated, they certainly made sure that the Russians living there know who is in charge now.  So, i do not blame the Russians for wanting to be part of Russia and not Ukraine.

There is no simple solution, there is no clear cut right or wrong.  The East Ukraine has mixture of Ukrainians and Russians living there, whatever happens, somebody is going to be unhappy with that outcome.  And I feel for all those people stuck in the middle of this.

Re Syria: The problem is, it was too little too late. If they had sent in troops as soon as the uprising started, then Bahsar would have been deposed by a united - and moderate - opposition which, just possibly, might have been able to form a viable alternative government and keep the extremists at bay. But they pussyfooted around for so long that the opposition was hijacked by fundamentalist militias - all with their own agenda - and the result, should Bashar fall now, will simply be anarchy.

Maybe at 1st very early on, but my Syrian friends who have  nothing but loathing for al-Assad, were very worried pretty much from the start, and the Syrian community did plead with our government not to support the rebels.  It took many month before our government started to acknowledge that the uprising is not something that we should be happy about.

Re: Recent News Items Not Considered Noteworthy By Some

And that is the reason I started this thread.

Take for instance the train incident. A few weeks back we had an instance where a white female racially abused an Asian lady and social media (including here) rightly went ballistic. A few weeks later the same thing happens, but this time the abuser is aboriginal, and though it’s initially reported by some main stream media, it hardly rated a mention on social media, and none here. Then there’s the ‘I don’t think my customers would like to be served by a black man’, incident, which was brushed aside with “he got 200 job offers as a result” so problem solved. Determination: As far as some here are concerned racism is only comment worthy when the racist is white.

The same goes for every other topic. Russia invades the Ukraine. That OK by some because the Ukraine falls within the Russian sphere of influence, and such, they (the Russians) have a right to interfere in the internal affairs of another sovereign nation if it suits their (Russia’s) national interest. However, Indonesia falls within our sphere of influence, but as far those very same posters are concerned, irrespective of our own national interest considerations, we have no right to interfere in their internal affairs.

Its very simple, our Media is controlled by one person who dances to the Governments tune for favourable media law here.

one allowing foreign interest to own the media

two allowing a monopoly to own nearly all of the media.

Re: Recent News Items Not Considered Noteworthy By Some

TB, i have not seen the aboriginal man abusing Asian girl incident in the news, so I cannot comment.  If somebody posted it here I would have been just as concerned about that.  Why didn't you post it if you considered it important omission from our discussion here?  Also, if it happened let's say at the time of the child with head, or execution of James Foley, or when MH17 was shot down, well something as racial abuse incident somehow does not register.

I did not say that I do not care about Ukraine because it is  in the sphere of Russian influence;  please read what I said.  I do NOT think it is OK for Russia invading Ukraine.  But I also do not think that we can declare war on Russia.

BUT, isn't it up to citizens of a country to decide how their country should be aligned?  In the past majority of Ukrainians were against joining NATO, and the ethnic Russians also oppose joining of EU. Ukraine became part of the Russian empire in the 18th century, and some of the Russians have been living there for couple of hundred years.

Do you have any suggestion how to sort this out so everybody is happy?

Re: Recent News Items Not Considered Noteworthy By Some

About 1400 children were sexually exploited in a northern England town, a report concluded on Tuesday in a damning account of "collective failures" by authorities to prevent victims as young as 11 from being beaten, raped and trafficked over a 16-year period.

Report author Alexis Jay cited appalling acts of violence between 1997 and 2013 in Rotherham, a town of some 250,000. The independent report came after a series of convictions of sexual predators in the region and ground-breaking reports in The Times of London.

Reading descriptions of the abuse makes it hard to imagine that nothing was done for so long. The report described rapes by multiple perpetrators, mainly from Britain's Pakistani community, and how children were trafficked to other towns and cities in the north of England, abducted, beaten, and intimidated.

Police "regarded many child victims with contempt", Professor Jay said, adding that many of the children were known to child protection agencies.

I wonder if the children were also from ethnic communities, what community were those perpetrators that were not Pakistani.  maybe they were priests?
