Question:
Does Islam really allow a man to take up to four wives?
Summary Answer:
Yes, a Muslim man can marry as many as four women, and have sexual relations with an unspecified number of slaves as well. Muhammad had eleven wives at one time.
The Quran:
Quran (4:3) - "Marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess." This verse clearly allows a man to have up to four wives (Allah conveniently granted Muhammad an exception... according to what Muhammad told his followers). According to the Hadith, the "justice" spoken of merely refers to the dowry provided the bride, not the treatment accorded following the wedding.
Quran (4:129) - "Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire" Underscores that a man is not able to treat multiple wives fairly. He would therefore be unable to acquire more than one wife if this were a requirement - which it is not. In fact, Muhammad was not able to treat his own wives fairly (see Additional Notes).
Quran (66:5) - "Maybe, his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your place wives better than you, submissive, faithful, obedient, penitent, adorers, fasters, widows and virgins" A disobedient wife can be replaced. A man can only have up to four wives, but he can rotate as many women as he pleases in and out of the lineup.

I wonder what women in the 21st century think about this?

Crystal clear if it is read with an open mind and not with specific intentions.
Judging as in, "you will burn in hell for the lifestyle you live.
Repent!!!!
Judging as in "my choices I made in my life are the right ones"
Repent!!!
Judging as in "I am a better person because of the choices I made compared to the choices you made"

No, I do not have the right to sit in judgement.
Opinions, as in, I have the right to defend someone.
Opinions, as in, if an individual acts like a bully, they are a bully.
Opinions, as in, many posts are cloudy and difficult to understand. In the future, if any individual finds my posts are hard to understand, the option is there to ignore them.
So if *you* judge someone a bully, it's not judgment.
You deem it fact, not judgment?
And you continue to say you have no right to judge others while judging others, and say that this isn't a contradiction.
Truly, one cannot make this kind of thing up!
We all judge, and to say otherwise is silly at best.
But anyhoo, the polyamorous.
Those that I've encountered (those not acting out of cultural mandates) can fairly be judged slippery, predatory, narcissistic, grossly lacking in self-awareness.
But no one's perfect, and there are some awful monogamous sorts out there as well.
What are ya gonna do?

What does distaff Islam think of the bias in favour of men in their alleged religion? I'll bet not many want to take on more than one husband.
Somali woman accused of having three husbands stoned to death by Al Shabaab militants
Islamic militants have stoned a woman to death in Somalia after a court they had set up declared her guilty of bigamy, witnesses said.
[...]
A man who presented himself as an Al Shabaab judge said the woman had confessed to having three husbands.
He said the three men were not aware they were married to the same woman and had testified against her.
Ms Jimale had admitted her guilt before the court and declared she was ready to be stoned to secure God's forgiveness, said the unidentified judge.

As has been documented here already the koran sanctions the taking of multiple spouses for males only.

Stoning seems a bit harsh, but if she wanted God's forgiveness and this was her path to it...

Many men in the Old Testament had many wives. Mary would have been only around 12 or13 when she was married off to Joseph who would have been around 90, and so she would have given birth to Jesus when she was only 12 or 14 at best. No religion is perfect just as the followers aren't perfect. Atrocities are more region specific than religion specific.

You can explain it to them, but you can't understand it for them.
(popular tag line I have seen here)
I've stated my opinion. (more then once) on what I believe about this subject.
I am not here to argue with any individual who chooses to be deliberately obtuse.

How does religion come up in real life. As a technical representitive I've worked w/ hundreds of people maybe thousands & it never comes up.
In hospitals we are always thanking God but I never ask which God.

And speaking of religions:
Arrested Catholic Archbishop’s computer contained over 100,000 images of children
Vatican detectives analyzing a computer used a by an archbishop arrested earlier this week discovered over 86,000 pornographic photos and 160 sexually explicit video files of children, reports the International Business Times.
According to investigators, another 45,000 pictures had been deleted.
Former Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, 66, was arrested at the Vatican earlier this week on charges that he paid to have sex with minors when he was a papal ambassador in the Dominican Republic from 2008 to 2012.
Wesolowski is the first Vatican official to be arrested within the city state on charges of pedophilia.
The former archbishop was recalled to Rome by the Vatican last year while still a diplomat in Santo Domingo and relieved of his duties following accusations from Dominican media that he was paying for underaged sex partners.
Until earlier this week, he had been free to roam Rome, but is now being held in in a small room in the basement of the Collegio dei Penitenzieri, which hosts the Vatican’s court and military police.
Vatican authorities are now investigating if Wesolowski was part of a network of pedophiles and whether he abused children in other posts during his career.
Wesolowski previously served in South Africa, Costa Rica, Japan, Switzerland, India and Denmark.
If convicted, Wesolowski faces 12 years in jail in the first trial for sexual abuse to be held inside the Vatican City.
His trial is expected to start in January.
It's really unbelievable, to see an Archbishop in handcuffs.
