Religious Sect Tells Mothers To Stop Driving

Leaders of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect in north London have said children who are driven to school by their mothers will be turned away at the school gates.

Rabbis from the marginal Hasidic sect Belz have told women in Stamford Hill who drive that they go against “the traditional rules of modesty in our camp”.

In a letter sent to parents last week, seen by the Jewish Chronicle, they say there has been an increase in the number of mothers driving their children to school and add that this has led to “great resentment among parents of pupils of our [Hasidic] institutions”.

The letter says the ban, to come into force in the summer, is based on the recommendations of Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach, the Belzer spiritual leader in Israel.

It says that if a mother has no other choice but to drive her child to school – for medical reasons, for example – she should “submit a request to the special committee to this effect and the committee shall consider her request”.

The move has been met with some disagreement within the Orthodox community.

Dina Brawer, the UK ambassador of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance, said: “What this is really about is the curtailing of women’s freedom of movement rendering them dependent on men. It’s an issue of power and control not one of religious sensibility.

The Belz, who originated in Ukraine in the early 18th century and established their headquarters in Israel after the second world war, are one of the most prominent Hasidic sects.

Re: Religious Sect Tells Mothers To Stop Driving

We asked the holy one, our teacher The Admor, Shlita, and his answer was thus: To have an ammendment that if a woman is driving a car, she cannot send her children to be educated in Belz institutions.

Therefore, we are informing you, that from Rosh Chodesh Elul 5775 and forward, no child will be allowed to learn in our school, if his or her mother drives a vehicle.

It would appear that they don't want the women to drive cars. At all.

Perhaps if you scroll back a bit and follow through from the beginning as the topic developed? ... Smiley Happy

This is not just about a school in London, however, it is an example of how control and domination of women in particular is exercised through religion and the religious power freaks.

Well, not sure what you are talking about........ this thread is about the 2 particular schools who don't want women to drive. That was what I was discussing.

Never mind, topics do develop as this one did xxx

It's a bit hard to simplify.  To put it in a nutshell for you and to help, it's about religions that treat their followers with total disrespect,  dominate their lives, abuse their children, tell them what to do, when, where and how to live and then expect the world to approve of it as part of "culture/religion".

The school would not comment, but pointed to a statement from the directors of Neshei Belz –

Organization of the Women of the Belz community in London – which said:

“As Orthodox Jewish women belonging to the Belz community in London, we feel extremely privileged and valued to be part of a community where the highest standards of refinement, morality and dignity are respected.

“We believe that driving a vehicle is a high pressured activity where our values may be compromised by exposure to selfishness, road-rage, bad language and other inappropriate behaviour.”

I know a couple of people who could benefit from a ban on driving.....Woman LOL

Just plain silly!  No matter where one drives or goes, one is exposed to that ... it is just a way of controlling the flock with draconion and ridiculous rules that don't belong in this century (or the last, or any century for that matter) ...  Smiley Very Happy

sounds like they should be kept off the road if they are prone to that sort of behaviour.

I just found a scripture that explicitley forbids women from being allowed to drive ........ it's in a little known scroll ... that only I and those running the school have access to ...... actually, it's so sacred that I must not divulge it here .... it's from a scroll written in the 8th century BC and it definitely says 'women are not allowed to drive motor vehicles of any sort' ............... take my word for it............... would I lie to you?Smiley Embarassed
