Soak new towels in cold water over night in the tub or bucket before using them. That removes the coating the manufacturer puts in them so the pile sits nice on the shop shelf, and it will make them more absorbent. Fabric conditioner is not recommended on towels either as it coats the cotton fibres and makes them less absorbent.

Thanks am, knew there was something that got rid of the "coating" but never knew what it was......and no softener ? Will give it a try.
