Mr Medvedev said Russia was also considering banning Western carriers from flying over Russia on flights to and from Asia - a move that would significantly swell costs and increase flight time.

Wow that's going to bite. I hope there's not another war. Or another depression.

.. from a number of Western countries which have imposed sanctions against Moscow over its policy on Ukraine.

Has Australia done that?

edit, Yes they did. I thought Abbott said he wasn't going to do that?

Ms Bishop said Australia had acted with other members of the international community to impose sanctions against Russia over its annexation of the Crimea in March and over its support for destabilising forces in Ukraine.

I think the Russian Federation action is unlikely to have any real effect upon us IF.

Having checked the Australian Bureau of Agricultural figures for 2013, I see that out of  $37.972 billion in agricultural exports, only $321 million of them went to the Russian Federation (0.84%).

I think the action is more for home/media consumption.

Maybe Monno, but these things tend to have a domino effect.

Yes, there will be another war. And another. And another. Economic sanctions? No fly zones? This is the sound of history repeating. The people who are pulling the strings know that war is good for business. The good news is that the war machine is not known for attacking a nation that is capable of fighting back.

Truth is, I think global politics as in the grip the likes of  George Soros and  Alan Greenspan and the IMF have on individual nations make it hard for any country to retain sovereignty.

I m not really sure why did we, or anybody else really protest the annexation of Crimea.  There was an election, and something like 90% of people voted for it.  Which is not surprising as vast majority are Russians, an Crimea was part of Russia for most of the modern history:

"The modern history of Crimea begins with the annexation by the Russian Empire in 1783. In 1921 the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was created. This republic was dissolved in 1945, and the Crimea became a province first of the Russian SSR (1945-1954) and then the Ukrainian SSR (1954-1991). Since 1991 it has had the status of an Autonomous Republic within Ukraine until its annexation by the Russian Federation in the 2014 Crimean Crisis."

Eastern Ukraine is a different story, Russians are only about 1/5 of population
