SA Police deployment of 'highly visible' heavily armed unit prompts public backlash
are we learning nothing from the current situation in the USA?
yes, have these guys available in a time of crisis
but having them out wandering the city whithout any justification is sending all the wrong messages!
why in the world does adelaide need to be deploying heavily armed police?
the likely hood of them being 'on scene' of a terror attack would be really slim
they cant be everywhere
better they are someplace 'out of sight' at the ready.

Couldn't agree more. Sure we need specialist armed police, but not patrolling the streets. Too easy for things to go wrong.
The police in S.A. have been getting more aggressive and out of control for quite awhile now. The force is employing more nasty, bully types and less of the good guys.I wonder if this is another step towards a police state where the public are scared whitless of the police.
Its a very dangerous, confrontational path police are treading.

No proper reason given and that's a reason for concern. If it's about border patrol then that's a massive overkill !!
We need law and order but this could be taking it to the extreme.
Protest groups will posssibly think twice about protesting. a good / bad way to silence the voices of the people.

I'd suspect that they have intel about a terrorist attack.

This is a new squad of around 50 officers that will be regularly patrolling sports events, large gatherings and popular places. Rundle Mall is just the main, central shopping strip in Adelaide. Personally I just think it's asking for trouble to have such heavily armed police on normal patrol. All police in SA have hand guns. That should be enough.

I hope that South Australia won't resemble the "other side" of the Berlin Wall. I hope that free speech won't be stifled.
