A Brisbane father says he is concerned for his eight-month-old son, whose Vietnamese mother faces deportation from Australia.
Lisa Le, 30, has been refused permanent residency after Assistant Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash decided it was not in the public interest to intervene and grant her a partner visa to stay in the country.
Ms Le, who is separated from her Australian husband, David Nguyen, has been told she must leave the country by June.
However, Mr Nguyen has called on Senator Cash to change her mind.
"I don't think my son deserves to be without a father," he said.
"My son doesn't deserve to be in the third world country, plus he is Australian, he deserves to stay here, he deserves to have a family and she should have a visa to stay back here."
Policy 'change' on visas unannounced
Angus Francis from the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service says the rights of the child are not being considered, and that the number of similar cases is worrying.
"Usually, in the past, the Minister would intervene," he said, adding that he had seen 10 cases like Ms Le's in recent weeks.
"So, it appears to be there has been a change of policy, there hasn't been a formally announcement of that policy, but we have seen a number of cases now where there has been issues with this."
Senator Cash says it would be inappropriate and unhelpful to comment on Ms Le's case. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-04-18/father-david-ngugen-fears-deportation-of-baby-vietnamese-mothe...

@silverfaun wrote:If you are an illegal immigrant and you have a child in the country you gained illegal entry into, does not automatically make the progeny a national of said country.
where is the reference to what you describe as illegal ? the childs father is an australian citizen as you are. the mothers method of entry isn't mentioned but i'd say she was here on a visa. the child is in fact a national that has to leave in otder to remain with the mother . the legalism applied by the senator (the shrieking insane sounding senator cash.. 'buckets of blood michaela'') is merciless and lacks humanity. you may approve but that doesn't make it a correct judgement.. not at all.

As posters discuss the meaning of Good friday, I thought this would be appropriate..........it's from the Official Vatican Network. Pope Francis seems like a breath of fresh air and a true believer. I really hope that more of this country's catholics and others follow his lead. It's great to see the Australian Young Christian Students playing such a positive role, good on them.

(Agenzia Fides) - A cry of "compassion" towards immigrants and asylum seekers, especially towards children: Pope Francis’ appeal in Lampedusa was welcomed by the association "Australian Young Christian Students" (AYCS), asking politicians to give special attention to children currently "confined" in camps and detention, according to the immigration system in force in Australia.
As reported in a statement sent to Fides, the AYCS raised its voice after Pope Francis’ visit in Lampedusa, which has brought international attention to the phenomenon of immigration and the immense suffering of the immigrants. In Australia, the issue is very sensitive and is at the center of a lively public debate.
"Children are particularly vulnerable and have come to Australia in search of help", says the note by AYCS sent to Fides. "What remains vital to their health and well-being is that children and their families are not subjected to long periods of detention". A recent report by "Human Rights Watch reveals that, in the migratory flows affecting Southeast Asia and the Pacific, often minors and their parents are arbitrarily arrested, in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, and are victims of severe abuse. Children who arrive in Australia, therefore, "seek stability and security that all children deserve", notes the Association of young Christians, inviting to the "full respect of international law."
Recently, more than 8,000 high school students across Australia carried out volunteer work in detention camps for immigrants, reactivated in Australia since 1992 for all immigrants arriving in the country without a visa. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 10/07/2013)

They are seeing their meal tickets drying up. The illegal immigrant industry are using children to emote, to further their raison d'etre.
If there was such an outrage against this type of policy then where were they for the last 6 years???
They were steadily building their industry with all the money and help from Labor they needed, Labor who totally abrogated all responsibility and just chucked money at it in the hope that it would go away, become an industry we needed, a non revenue raising industry at that.
Australians have woken up to the crocodile tears now being shed, they are a wake up to the lies and manipulation illegal immigrants traded in along with the smugglers., they are a wake up to the left now trying to show how much more they care, not, they are using their failure in this as a political tool.
Well guess what?? it's not working anymore.
Seriously?
