I selected wonderful manly names for my sons; names that couldn't be shortened, I thought.

So what did their friends do - NICKNAMES.

For example:  (Not my sons names really - but a good example of similar)

Adam. And on to become Buff. And onto Buffee.

Clark. And on to Clack.  Thence Clackee.

DEB

Ok.

Adam :

Into those beaches or has a really great car he looks after well.

Clark :

Noisy younger brother.

Well, that little person down the bottom blowing rasberries says it all : Hurrumph.

For your erudition - my Halo will not fit in the car - it has to go on the Roof Rack.

Would hate to end up like quebec.

As above post said, we will do it for her LOL

people should be "made to learn english".......

There used to be easy access to Esl classes for anyone who needed them, not so much these days

I sometimes find myself wishing I couldn't read english

NSW Education Department funding changes hit ESL support program

Vulnerable refugee and migrant children will be disadvantaged by the abolition of specialist support for teachers of English as a second language, academics and community groups have warned.

Ten academics from the state's top universities fear the changes are the beginning of the end for the English as a second language program in public schools across NSW.

Anglicises,, Does that mean to go by a diffrent name? The Franklin county sheriffs would say "yes" They kept calling me by the wrong name and brutally arrested and abused me when i wouldn't answer to it. "obstructing offical bussiness" Had I known that they would take it that far, I might have went ahead and Anglicises

.

Anglicise - it means to make it sound more English, rather than foreign.

Does every post have to be so dramatic, Joanie?

We get it that you feel downtrodden by authority,

but every post?

You don't need a teacher standing in front of you to learn what is what. Learning English is a damn night easier now than it was even 10, 20 years ago when, in Vic you had courses in the city you went to.

At least now you have CD's, DVD's, tapes, MP4 players, ON LINE Computers, you name it.

This from a NSW council which I know is similar to things in other councils

"Improve your English

If you would like to improve your English, there are graded readers and English as a Second Language (ESL) kits with CDs, CDROMs, MP3 and MP4. There are six computers in the Language Learning Room at Chatswood Library on The Concourse, providing access to the subscribed English learning databases for all levels. Download the  Learning English in Willoughby - 949 KB brochure."

No, i do not think people should be made to change their names; that takes their identity away from them.  Of-course, many do because they want to fit in.  And you cannot force people to learn English, any more than you can force Australian people to learn to spell properly, understand math, or play piano.  Some people find i easy some more difficult, and some will always struggle.  Living in foreign country and not being able to communicate is very difficult, I doubt that anybody who comes does not wish they could speak English.
