as far as wearing items of clothing that may hide the identity of a person - why do all Financial Institutions (and maybe others too, I don't know) insist that helmets are removed when you enter their premises?

because banks HAVE been robbed by people wearing full faced helmets ................ same as stockings and masks................. and the BANKS make that rule, it is not a law.

Same one as the check bags bigger than A4 in shops.

there are also other extremist religions around the world that I certainly dont fully understand or agree with but I don't think we can dictate to people what thaey can and can't wear here in Australia.

If the burqa is used to conceal weapons or identity in this country, then it should be banned to be worn in public in this country.

do you have any instances of where this has happened here?  imo they would stand out like a sore thumb amongst our population. I know it does happen in countries where they all wear burqas

the Bostom bombers had backpacks didn't they? not "clothing of concealment?

Sydney woman Carnita Matthews, 47, was jailed for six months in November last year after being found guilty of falsely claiming that a police officer had forcibly tried to remove her veil during a stop in Woodbine, southwest Sydney, in June 2010.

But Ms Matthew's conviction was quashed this week after NSW District Court judge Clive Jeffreys ruled that prosecution lawyers in the case failed to prove it was Ms Matthews who had filed the complaint, because the person who made it was also wearing a full-face veil and was never fully identified.

I don't think it's that easy to "escape" a culture you were born and raised into. I think devout muslim women live under much more familial, cultural and/or religious pressure than we realise.

Isn't that true of all cultures? But why is that a problem?

I have my Italian culture ingrained in me including all the religious and mythical stuff that comes with that. My Greek friends do. My Muslims friends do.

Personally I don't see it as a problem, Martini, unless it becomes a repressive measure against women. We support women's rights in this country.

As we have now commenced military action against Iraq, a predominantly Muslim country, special considerations against internal terrorism apply.

If the federal police suspect the burqa is used to conceal weapons and identity within this country, in terrorist acts against our govenment and our people, I have no problem with it being banned in public.

The above pic of people dressed in the niqab,  unsure if they are male or female.  This dress is not suitable to our

Australian way of life  and our culture.   I've seen people dressed like this at the beach at  Brighten Le Sands, NSW in the middle of summer.  It should be banned in all public places IMO.

What I see on here is the condemnation of our western culture to the defence of stone age customs that see women as no more valuable than a goat, probably less so.

All you women on here who defend the burqa and what it represents have forfeited their right to any feminist argument in the future imo.

I will not respond your anecdotal argument. Anybody can make anything up. I simply don't believe you.

As for "anecdotal argument" is that the same as the "Sophie" letter Rudd read out at the Copenhagen conference? to looks of sheer bemusement and incredibility.

Defending the wearing and use of this garment is spitting in the face of freedom for all women and bowing down men who kill women like dogs on a street.

Agree, this garb has no place in our society. Women should rise up and condemn it but on here we are served up sickening "anecdotal" and partisan spruiking.  Shame on them.
