and surrounding themselves in trees and bushland.

It seems very risky to live in these areas and very risky for the firefighters.

Where my parents live they have had a huge increase in insurance premiums because of the risk of flood (something to do with the council) yet I don't think it has ever flooded there.

It's beyond me why anyone would want to live in a flood zone.

Yes my insur premiums went up last time too, quite a bit.

We are in a major regional city. A port city, surrounded by 3 major bodies of water! Has flooded before and probably will again. The main issue is not the flood waters coming 'in' but the inability of the flood waters to get away quickly due to insufficient drainage.

A Shire issue......

Bit like Bundaberg Qld I guess

There are areas that now flood but never did. Why? In some cases because the surrounding areas have been built up, natural water ways made to change direction, Over populating the land, not allowing for the free flow and run off of water as it did decades ago. Roads contribute to this also.

The lack of forward planning is a serious problem.

I'm safe as my property is higher but I now live in an area that seems to flood easily. Yet my insurance barely increased. punch used a great example the other day when she mentioned they are now paying way more for insurance and have to pay a flood penalty! They live on top of a mountain.....it can't flood!

Re: Should there be laws to stop people living / building in bushfire prone areas?

No I don't think so.

People should have the liberty of living where they choose, be it by the seaside or treeside or mountainside. Of course people should be aware of the hazards and secure their homes accordingly.

I have no problems with insurance premiums being higher in high risk living areas.

Should we save risk out lives saving them in bushfires though?

Maybe we could include those that live on beach front properties, on cliff tops. They are being eroded at a great pace. People refuse to leave making it a safety issue.

Well insurance companies are one matter.....but as for the shire....well, when I bought over 10 years ago the real estate agents were 'very' cagey when selling here!.....I always do a check of things like local authority etc before signing off on a contract of sale-found that ALL properties in this town were built on a flood plain-at this time insurance companies refused to acknowledge the flood plain-even though designated a 100 yr flood plain....reason? "because we have not been informed by the shire officially".....and the shire and local pollies ALL refused to acknowledge and 'deal' with the issue *amazing hey?!.....anyways my place was built extra high than most....to the building levels specified for flood levels back then BUT a bit of a worry with predicted flood levels for the future.

Am irrate that drainage works are not being addressed in this major regional 'city' with allocated funds from both State and local govt and the Flood Channel that was promised years back to be dug-has still not been dug, to allow for tidal surge-to prevent flooding. Extension of the port itself does not seem to be lacking funds. I have repeatedly questioned all sides of the political fence and was even told(inwriting) that all these works would be done at the time of the port extension. Nothing has been done yet the Port extension is coming along 'swimmingly'.

Insurance companies?.....well, after the Bundaberg floods, the first one of the batch of recurring floods that the poor things had, a few years back- I called my insur co. and checked if we had flood cover. They said 'no, you only have storm cover' (back b4 all the insur companies were hauled over to change the storm/flood cover wording in their policies/legislation stuff) So I requested that they upgrade to include flood, duly (thankfully) took note of date, time reqstd and name of operator. Then the Toowoomba thing happened about 4 or more months or so later, i think.....got a pressing niggle in my brain......rang my insurance co. back to check if they had actually added the flood cover as i had reqstd (from my handwritten notes).......also asked why they had not asked for more fees?? They denied all knowledge of my request. I took them to task by inviting the local tv media and papers into my home......wouldn't you know it.....b4 the story could be published I recvd a phone call from a top exec at the insurance co......offering profuse apologies......and offered me a too ridiculous to refuse insurance and contents deal for the remaining 6+ months, from memory it was about $15.00!! Cross as I was I know a bargain when I see one. Everyone has their priceSmiley Frustrated

But they obviously calculated in their pseudo 'bargain' as am paying thru the nose now. creeps
