So Much For The Right To Freedom Of Speech

Much has been made of "Freedom of Speech" and "Freedom of Expression in light of the Charlie Hebdo attack. Yet we do not practice what we preach, it seems.

VICTORIA’S Health Minister has asked organisers of a conference featuring anti-vaccination speakers to reconsider their “irresponsible” event to protect children.

The March 1 conference covers topics such as “vaccination risks, benefits and alternatives”.

Oh and... before anyone starts... I am not anti-vaccine, but I do believe the risks are worth considering.

I take it you haven't heard the medical experts asking that this speaker not be given a visa to speak at vaccination forums as the views she promotes pose a public health risk by making false claims.   Not only that but she profits from selling untested alternatives to vaccination.

Speaking of the right to freedom of speech. did you hear about the person who got arrested in Qld yesterday for wearing a "I'm with Stupid" Tshirt and standing with the LNP spruikers?   :D:D:D  They joined in and waved for photos until they realized they were the stupid, then phoned the police  :D:D:D

How do they know she's making false claims they haven't heard her speak? And if they're refusing her right to speak, what happened to freedom of speech?

I mean...in the Charlie Hebdo case, it was acknowledged the publisher was being inflammatory and putting innocent lives at risk. Yet freedom of speech in this case is being lauded.

Double standards?

Not only that but she profits from selling untested alternatives to vaccination.

Do try not to let your mind wander too much and stay on topic pls, gleee :D:D:D

Interesting what a 15 minute google search turns up.

Dr Tenpenny alleges the fact that there are links to many harmful and /or fatal diseases, caused by vaccinations, yet has to prove any such link. Assertions don't make it true!

In fact, the majority of the medical fraternity denounce her claims as unproven and patently false.

How about we ask all of the children that die horrible deaths each year from Infuenza, Meninococcal disease and so many other diseases which could have been prevented by vaccination/innoculation, but were prevented by (well-meaning) parents, whether they'd have chosen NOT to be vaccinated?

freedom of speech?? we don't really have it in this country

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/mike-carlton-resigns-from-the-sydney-morning-herald-20140806-100w1u.html

this guy was hounded on social media and by the murdoch press after a cartoon was posted in one of his columns. Murdoch journalists published his twitter comments but neglected to mention the hateful/revolting abuse he was responding to

I learnt a lot about the murdoch press bias while watching that episode, they gave a very untrue account of events

she is a dangerous charlatan profiting by promoting fear in vulnerable and gullible parents.

her interest is not in saving lives but in lining her own pockets, she should be shut down - kudos to those who are preventing her fear mongering.

Sherri Tenpenny: Sydney venue cancels seminar of US anti-vaccination campaigner

Pressure is mounting against a planned speaking tour by American anti-vaccination campaigner Sherri Tenpenny, with at least one venue now cancelling a seminar.

Dr Tenpenny, an osteopath who believes vaccines cause autism, asthma, ADHD and auto-immune disorders, is planning a series of lectures against vaccination in March aimed at parents of babies.

But she has been criticised by the Stop The Australian Anti-Vaccination Network for "endangering people's health" and "targeting vulnerable parents".

Kareela Golf and Social Club in Sydney has cancelled a seminar, while a group of doctors cancelled their own workshop at a Melbourne venue, angry the place had also booked Dr Tenpenny next month.

General manager of the Kareela club, Dennis Skinner, said the venue did not want to be associated with such a controversial subject matter.

"The club as a venue, we don't have a position for or against this, we just decided the subject matter was too controversial for us to be involved in," he said.

An organiser of the tour, Stephanie Messenger, said those opposing the series of talks were trying to hide things from the public.

"They say they want parents to make an informed choice, but you can't do that if you don't have all the information. So they are trying to suppress the information," she said.

A pro-vaccination group has asked Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to deny the anti-vaccination campaigner a visa to speak in Australia.

Thousands of Australians have now signed a petition lobbying Canberra to deny the visa.

Ms Messenger said cancelling the visa would set a worrying precedent.

"It would set the precedent that they can just cancel visas for anyone who hasn't done anything wrong," she said.

"All of Dr Tenpenny's information is referenced by medical and scientific papers ... so I don't know what they're trying to stop the people from seeing."

Mr Dutton is yet to respond.

"The Minister is taking advice on this matter and will make further comment when appropriate," a spokesman said.

I believe in free speech, I think she has already had the opportunity of it, and scientists have denounced her opinion as being incorrect.

If she is given the opportunity to speak in at the conference, I believe Australian scientists and Medical Doctors will also denounce her opinion.

So "freedom of speech" is just a hollow slogan?

The trouble is, that although science will denounce her ideas as the rubbish that they are, gullible parents will take her advice to heart, and only cause more suffering to their children.

Her accusations of vaccines having causal effects on Autism, Athsma and other illnesses has been rejected by mainstream medical science - it's just that they can't definitively say that there are no links, just as Tenpenny cannot, and should not, say that there are!

It's suggestive hyperbole, and only goes to promote her medical practices.
