Word has got out the due to the destructiveness ( organic maintenance of native pasture land ) of wild horses shredding ( adding manure to the soil and suppressing weeds in open ground) of the Alpine region , all claimed 5,000 of them ( count them, nellie , buck, sammy...) within only 5,199 sq kms of high country wilderness , (only half of Melbourne metro area) the decision has been made to remove them with extreme prejudice
I sort of think that the sight of a small herd of wild horses cavorting in a small hidden valley is somehow majestic

A mob of wild horses in a national park may look majestic, but they are also very destructive. Whether its wild camels, pigs, foxes, cats horses, deer, or even introduced starfish on our reefs, these cute little critters are destroying our native wilderness areas and contributing to the extinction of our native wildlife. We have a responsibility to future generations to manage our remaining wilderness areas properly.
Trained, professional shooters are probably the most humane way to get rid of wild horses quickly. The sooner its done the better.

Except in NSW, where the relevant minister's mate runs a brumbie spotting tourist venture.
They are an icon now. Also blame Banjo Patterson.

It's his fault for sensationalising it.

It's also his fault for inspiring Dermot Weld to bring Vintage Crop for the 93 cup when I was on Te Akau Nick at 160/1...ran second

That's what each way is for.

Also the high country cattle people - but they were exterminated driven off as well - maybe the Australian culture cringe at play , anything alluding to a meaningful past and independence has a tendency to be suppressed, rather than nationally embraced and shared
