Someone Important Owns That Car

Jodi Magi, 39, was sentenced for a cyber crimes offence after reportedly posting a photo on Facebook of a car parked across two disabled spots outside her Abu Dhabi apartment.

She has since been released from prison after an ordeal during which she claims she was “shackled at the ankles, strip-searched, blood tested, [and] forced to sleep on a concrete floor without a mattress or pillow”.

Ms Magi says she still has “zero idea” what she has done wrong. And, let’s be clear – it’s likely nothing.

She simply posted what she thought was a funny picture online.

But, as she was being hauled to an Abu Dhabi prison where she spent two days with “no access to toilet paper or eating utensils”, I bet she knew exactly what she’d done wrong.

If she had been living in the UAE for any amount of time the age-old UAE truism would have come back to her – it’s not what laws you break, it’s who you **bleep** off.

Wonder how Ms Magi would've fared in the UAE if she'd been wearing a F*ck You Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan T-shirt.

Like she had the liberty to post this pic here in Australia?

The 39-year-old West Australian woman was arrested and jailed on Sunday morning after she had been found guilty of "writing bad words on social media".

what did she actually write?

it wasn't just for posting a pic.

Re: Someone Important Owns That Car

I don't think anybody important owned the car.   She publicly shamed someone

and they wanted payback

In February, Ms Magi took a photo of a car in her apartment block in Abu Dhabi that was parked across two disabled parking spaces without any disability stickers.

She blanked out the number plate and put it on Facebook, drawing attention to the seemingly selfish act but not providing any identifying details or names.

However, someone in the apartment block complained to police and the case went to an Abu Dhabi court in June.

Ms Magi, who had lived in Abu Dhabi since 2012, was forced to sign multiple documents in Arabic without any translation.

Two weeks ago she was found guilty of "writing bad words on social media about a person" and told she would be deported.

I don't know that there were any words. I thought she'd written something as well, but I couldn't find anything on any news sites.

Ms Magi said she owed her "speedy" release to her nationality, intense media coverage, the Australian embassy and support from family, friends and "people I have never even met".

Re: Someone Important Owns That Car

I wonder if her deportation was something to do with her overstaying her visa.

Like Australia, maybe anyone caught without a valid visa are kept in a detention centre, until a flight out is available.

According to the Daily Mail.....

The 39-year-old detailed living in a '60 floor sky-scraper with windows which barely open overlooking city and desert in the Middle East,' on her blog in June.

According to her blog, Ms Magi was previously a graphic designer in Melbourne and Perth before moving to the United Arab Emirates in 2012 with her partner.

She found work teaching local Emirati women skills in graphic design and illustration at Zayed University while also focusing on her own artistic endeavours.

The fact of the matter is that she publicly shamed a citizen of the UAE, and most probably a male. Now every body knows that if you do those sort of things in an arab country, and you happen to be a woman, and a foreigner as well, then this is the type of punishment to expect. - I wasn't aware of the fact that she had, that, t-shirt - I hope she has seen fit to throw it away.

Re: Someone Important Owns That Car

she was charged under the

UAE Cyber Crime Law.

a bit difficult to state facts without knowing

full details.

from reading about similar cases, the

law applies equally to men and women

regardless of nationality.

UAE man faces $68,000 fine for swearing on WhatsApp

The new law was brought to light when the UAE's supreme court ordered the retrial of a man fined $800 for the offence, arguing the fine was too lenient.

The man was convicted of swearing at a colleague using the smartphone instant messaging app.

It also criminalizes acts by any one to insult others or to accuse others of acts which would lead to punishment or contempt by a third party, online or through any other information technology means.
