now, this may be a little weird, and please forgive me for asking this but, you haven't had any tradies around lately looking at problems like plumbing or electrical ? Or anyone doing quotes for something? Who may have taken a few tiles off to inspect something and forgotten to put them back???
No tradies have been around that I have arranged.
my dad and BIL are coming around to do a LOT of house repairs inside and out that the lazy ex couldn't be bothered with. BIL knows all kinds of tradies so there is no need to call in someone.

Fortunately they didn't get into the house itself. What saved him - and may have saved you as well - was that the roof was insulated, making it impossible to tell where the manhole cover was.
I do have insulation. Maybe it was only for a look in? Hopefully if it is a would- be thief they have been out off with what the did (or didnt see)?

How scary/creepy for you Kylie.
I have heard of burglars breaking into commercial buildings (bottle stores, etc) by going through the roof. That way, I guess, they woud circumvent any burglar alarms on external doors or windows.
Good that your neighbour noticed and let you know though.
If it was your ex he would have to to be very careful none of the neighbours saw him, as they would probably recognise him by sight seeing as he used to live there.

I would think of more naturalistic possibilities before jumping the gun. Tiles can get blown around if the wind is just right. It happens all the time.
If I really want to break in someone's house, I would just check no one's home and break a window at the back to get in.
You try getting in from the roof. it's hard work and time consuming. And you got to be pretty nimble to crawl around in there.

Hon, if it was your ex he could have thought it would just look like he was doing the nice thing and completing some repairs for you. That wouldn't arouse alot of suspicion as your neighbours would be familiar with him.
Maybe make it clear to your neighbours that he is no longer living there, has no reason to be there when you are not and that he certainly isn't authorised to do any maintenance etc.
I would also get BIL to have a good look around in the roof with a BRIGHT torch to see if there is anything left behind in the roof.
I also would discourage having the ex in your home again. Set up a neutral exchange / meeting place. This seems to be snowballing and you don't need the stress.

Also Kylie, as you know I used to live in your area and had a house very similar to your's. Many times when the ex lost his keys or forgot them or closed the deadlock behind him, he would go through the roof as it "left no damage" like a window lock broken or a window jimmied would.

I don't usually pay attention to many threads on here. But is this ex- the one you had the baby with? Did ya marry him? Why the break up?

Tiles can be moved by the wind such as happened to me ๐ ...but the pics by Klyie look more like soemone has moved them IMO. Lady around the corner came home to find some of tiles removed....apparently a solar panel company had started on the wrong roof:O but failed to make her roof good again.

by the way, aren't your tiles nailed at all? I don't know about your area but some councils insist on every 2nd or 3rd row being nailed - see the hole in the tile in the photo by twinkles.

I think shhh is right Kylie, well it rings true. I know you think he wouldn't do it, but people change over break ups, especially when they start to realise 'its real' and you're not wanting to go back. That's when the trouble can start. Just when you said that he's not really taking it well, makes me think even more that Shhhh's theory is right. And like Cat said it's very telling that it was above your room.
Maybe he was just sussing it out, then when he took the tiles off realised that he couldn't get in, or be in there unnoticed. Although you would think that he would put the tiles back on.
