Someone tried to break into my house! :(

Through the roof! ๐Ÿ˜ž

Yesterday while I was at work, the neighbour across the road came over to tell my grandmother (at my house babysitting 13 month old) that there are roof tiles lifted and a big hole that will let in a lot of the rain forecast for the afternoon!?!?

She had a look and it was pretty easy to see. At the front of the house.
Luckily my BIL is a builder and once I'd had the phone calls at work, my sis phoned her hubby to pop over and check it out.

He said that tiles had been pulled off enough to let a person slip through! He replaced the tiles and sealed some cracked ones next to the removed ones.

About 20 mins later we had a quick but heavy downpour of rain so happy that he fixed it.....

But now I'm worried! Why would someone want to come in through the roof? It's pretty open at the front of the house, surely a would-be thief would go around the back where it's less open and break in through a window or back glass door?

I had trouble sleeping last night, and feel very uneasy today ๐Ÿ˜•

I'm home now til Mon, need to speak to neighbours and go to local Police station to make a report.

Hey kylie! I agree with everyone else... My first thought was the ex too. I was thinking tho he prob did it so he could get in to scare With noises you so he could be the protector and you would take him back.

Sorry, didn't know there was background...but even so, don't panic until you rule out every other possibility as well.  Otherwise, you'll spend your life on egg shells.

If it is someone with bad intent, you might want to invest in a sneaky digital camera set up to capture anyone coming into your driveway or via the back of the house e.g. several spy cams....  They're fairly cheap these days & I'm sure someone here has the smarts to advise on what you'd need.  Evidence is always good to have...suspicion isn't proof.

Seems more like, kids just mucking around...i.e. re-enacting a scene from mission impossible or some video game...who knows.  Do you keep a ladder in your backyard in view?  If so, lock it away. If not, is there anything else that might allow someone to climb on to your roof?

If not....then it may Be nature.

Do you have possums living nearby?  or even in your roof?.   Depending on where you live, a possum might have decided to move in if the tiles were loose....?  We regularly have a fat possum & his brood stampede across our colorbond roof...sounds like a herd of elephants. - just saying they like hanging around on roofs & they can remove tiles if they're loose.

Get your OH or BIL to go up in the roof & take a look around.  If something or someone has been in there, it will be fairly obvious.

may be kids mucking around?

BIL says they were not loose and couldn't be nature.

i haven't heard any strange noises, but I do crash by the time I've worked and dealt with 2 teens & a baby!

From BIL observations yesterday, no one has gotten into the house. Maybe they were interrupted or change of heart?

i just don't know ๐Ÿ˜ž

thanks Sandy.

i had my doubts about his mental stability, he's taken the break up so hard.

i know he has been parked in another street watching me and tries to keep me at home waiting for him to visit hiss daughter, if he knows I've got a P-T apt he will deliberately come late!

he has ranted about me wanting to see " other guys" but not shown any signs of violence against me. I don't feel at all frightened of him, just feel sorry for him.

all I can really do is report every/anything that concerns me.

i just can't believe he would do something like that?!

Kylie, that's how my cousin's ex acted.  Followed her and spied on her for 6 months and the minute she went to dinner with someone else (the taxi driver saw him in the garage when he picked them up), he broke in and was waiting in the roof.  Don't mean to scare you but please be vigilant.  If you remember, she is no longer with us.  She was like you, clean living, beautiful and very kind to everyone.

I just think its odd. From memory you said he used his keys after you split and was out out when you changed the locks? I reckon he thought it would be an easy way to sneak in and out. Either to make scary noises in the roof or move things around in your house just to freak you out.

It seems as an outsider looking in that he is taking the break up bad not because he loves you as such but more because he doesn't like you've made a choice. Was he possessive when you were together?

I think you're doing the right thing...i.e. ruling out what it may or may not have been.

Think about the spy cams - Parents have them to spy on babysitters so why not on ex spouses to prove stalking?  I don't know much about spycams, but I know it's possible and all you need is proof and he's gone.

Film evidence is pretty hard to dispute & it would amount to a breach of AVO if you have one & no doubt proof of stalking if he's persistent.

Ever considered getting a Rottweiler? They're great family dogs and nobody argues with 'em.

Nobody's breaking into this house = you'd never make it out alive....lol

Kylie, that's really creepy and I'm glad your neighbour noticed and it could be fixed so quickly.

as for it being your ex....well, until you get legal custody orders in place, with a neutral pick up/drop off point for your ex to pick his daughter up, so no need for him to be anywhere near your home, he is going to keep getting mixed messages from you about your relationship.

That may sound harsh but I think most know that when going through a hard break up, any hint of getting back together is pounced on.  At the moment, I'm sure you have mr ex coming to your home to visit with Sammy as you think it's best for her but in his mind, he may think you still want to see him and that's why you invite him over.

It could have been anyone trying to get in but if it was him, the spycams plus leaving him with no doubt that the marriage is over will hopefully stop any further attempts if it was him and if it's anyone else the spycams will prove who.

I'm glad you notified the police and will be buying the lock for the manhole.

Really hope it was just some foolish kids thinking they're hotshot crims......and that they fell off the roof !!

there's one thing I don't understand - when you take the tiles off the roof their are battens running between the main roof trusses - you'd have to be pretty small to squeeze in between them - or is your roof different to the type I'm thinking about??
