Something interesting happened on the way to the budget release...

Altho the Murdoch presses are going a little crazy this week in the lead up to the budget and the Hockey/Abbott team are wearing out their index fingers in the finger pointing frenzy, I thought it might be timely to give some simple figures on exactly how much Labor spent during their tenure in comparison to some averages:

• The average govt spending to GDP over the past 30 years was 25%.
• The average government spending during Howards time was 24.1%.
• The average government spending during Labors time was 25.2%.
• The highest spending occurred in 2009-2010 (26.1%) when the impact of the GFC was at it's highest.
• The lowest spending occurred in 2011-2012 (24.3%) when the global economy stabilised.

Hardly the kind of figures that require the level of Liberal hysteria being generated.

Given that there have been a multitude of articles and analysis done since the budget estimates were released in September last year it was a bit hard to pick what to show you nero. But here is a smattering of stuff. You will have to get your calculator out and figure it all out year to year:

Another interesting stat for you. Our lowest spending to GDP occurred in 1989 during the Hawke/Keating years. It fell to 22.9% - a figure that we haven't seen since.

And we are not likely to see again in the distant future.

I think I read that the Liberal Forecast spending to GDP is set to peak at over 26% by 2015-16. I wonder who they will think to blame then?

I think the plan is to stay in election campaign mode until then. 

They campaigned for 3 years before the last election and they haven't stopped yet. If they keep up the anti Labor campaign they hope to eventually destroy them ensuring no opposition for years to come.
